A new report indicates a [easyazon_link identifier=”B000IZ21BS” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Child’s Play[/easyazon_link] remake is in the works from MGM.

This new report from ComicBook.com indicates not only will MGM be remaking Child’s Play, but they plan to make big changes to horror icon, Chucky.

[easyazon_link identifier=”B000IZ21BS” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Child’s Play[/easyazon_link] was originally a 1988 slasher film directed and co-written by Tom Holland based on a story by Don Mancini. The story sees a widowed mother give her son a doll that is possessed by the soul of an serial killer.

Serial killer Charles Lee Ray is fleeing justice when homicide detective Mike Norris guns him down inside a toy shop. Just as he is about to die, Charles Lee Ray transfers her soul into a “Good Guy” doll using a Haitian Vodou spell.

According to ComicBook.com’s sources this origin story is getting nixed. Chucky will be getting a new origin and background. He will be “a defective ‘Buddy doll’ whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.”

If this origin sounds familiar to you, it might be because a similar ideas was featured on The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror III.

The report also indicates another major character will be introduced for the film. This character is described as a “Chinese factory worker who commits suicide shortly after re-programming a Buddy doll to have no limitations.”

I’d imagine that his motivations and reasoning will be a lynchpin on the plot of the reboot. And it makes you wonder why the worker would do this and then end his life?

The answer to those questions will be what separates this reboot from the original Child’s Play for better or worse.

Production for the Child’s Play remake is expected to begin in the next few weeks.

In a big twist, the film will not feature the original creatives behind Child’s Play. Producing partner David Kirschner, writer Don Mancini, and actor Brad Dourif are not attached to MGM’s remake. However they are developing more Chucky films. Last year, they just released Cult of Chucky and they plan to make more. In fact, they are also developing a Chucky TV series.

Mancini has been vocal in his opposition to MGM’s remake.
