DC Films has some hype brewing with their upcoming Joker origin film starring Joaquin Phoenix, but it isn’t the only Joker movie DC has in the works. The rumored Joker and Harley Quinn movie starring Jared Leto and Margot Robbie is still in the works and the writers recently opened up to provide some killer details about the project.

Writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa recently talked with Metro about their potential film, describe as a mash-up between [easyazon_link identifier=”B009ZM6WEC” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Bad Santa[/easyazon_link] and [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LTHO4KO” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]This Is Us[/easyazon_link], and what we can expect. They describe a little bit of the script and how they went about putting it together.

“It is great. The whole thing starts with Harley kidnapping Dr Phil. Played by Dr Phil hopefully. Because her and the Joker are having problems with their relationship.”

This sounds pretty funny. I’d hate to be Dr. Phil having to play relationship counseler for two of Gotham’s most dangerous criminals. It probably won’t end well for him.

They then went on to describe just how much fun they had writing the script and compared it to their past projects in Bad Santa and This Is Us.

“We had so much fun, I don’t know if we have had more fun writing a script in our career. It was sort of like, we wrote ‘Bad Santa’ a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our ‘This Is Us’ sensibility. We kind of meshed them together. We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a ‘Bad Santa,’ f***ed up, mentally deranged people. It was a lot of fun.”

I’ve seen both Bad Santa and This Is Us, and I can say this sounds pretty intense and crazy. A good combination for a movie about Joker and Harley.

Though the pair are both excited about the story they penned, they aren’t clear where in the DC and Warner Bros. pipeline it sits.

Requea claims, “I don’t know where it is on the queue of DC movies.” Ficarra confirmed their uncertainty, “We handed the script in and everybody loved it. But I don’t know when they are going to do it.”

While they weren’t clear when the script might actually be turned into a film, they did acknowledge that DC has Birds of Prey and the Joker origin film ahead of them. Ficarra hopes it could be on the docket after Birds of Prey,

“Because I know that they want to do ‘Birds Of Prey’ and they want to do Todd’s ‘Joker’ film first. Maybe if ‘Birds Of Prey’ goes well ours will be next.”

It’s possible we might see this Joker and Harley Quinn film sometime in 2021. Deadline just reported that Warner Bros. set a release date for the Harley Quinn-centric Birds of Prey film for February 7, 2020.

What do you think? Does what writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have to say give you hope for a good Joker and Harley Quinn movie? Or are you still unsure?
