Lena Dunham Shuts Down Her Feminist Website Lenny Letter

Lena Dunham, who was rumored to direct Batgirl, along with co-founder Jenni Konner and editorial director Molly Elizalde informed their readers that they will be shutting down their feminist website Lenny Letter.

In a blog post on the website, the trio announced the site would be shutting down after only being around for a little less than four years. Dunham and company didn’t reveal a specific reason for the website shutting down writing, “there’s no one reason for our closure.”

While Dunham wrote the post to inform readers the site was shutting down, she still managed to take the opportunity to make the post political:

“There is nothing more critical to counteracting the daily devastation of the current regime than the midterm elections.”

While Dunham didn’t state any specific reasons for the site shutting down, the site saw its fair share of controversies.

A former writer for the site Zinzi Clemmons accused Dunham of “hipster racism.” She specifically called for black women to distance themselves from Dunham. “It is time for women of color – black women in particular – to divest from Lena Dunham.” Clemmons would go on to define “hipster racism.”

“I’d call their strain ‘hipster racism.’ which typically uses sarcasm as a cover, and in the end, it looks a lot like gaslighting – ‘It’s just a joke. Why are you overracting?’ is a comment response to these kids of statements.”

Clemmons also noted Dunham’s brand of feminism is different from what she was experiencing while attending a literary festival in Nigeraia.

“It is a beautiful thing. I have been awed and inspired by the women here who are facing such immense obstacles, putting themselves in danger every day to help women in some of the worst conditions on earth.”

She would also state she left the publication because of Dunham’s support of Girls writer Murray Miller who was accused of sexual assault by Aurora Perrineau. Clemons wrote, “One of my best friends was victimized in almost the exact same way by someone in Lena’s circle. It was never addressed, and he continues to move in those circles and has a powerful job.”

Dunham eventually apologized for defending Miller.

She also had to apologize to New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after she claimed he was ignoring her because he didn’t find her sexually appealing.

Dunham also compared President Donald Trump to mass murderer Dylann Roof stating, “Not only is he a racist, but he’s a racist with untreated mental illness. So under [different] circumstances he’s Dylann Roof.”

She also accused two American Airlines employees of “transphobic talk” at New York’s JFK International Airport. American Airlines was “unable to substantiate” Dunham’s claims. Interestingly enough evidence also indicated that Dunham was in Terminal 4 when she made the accusation. American Airlines operates out of Terminal 8 at JFK.

Dunham was also accused of lying after she stated she had to give up a dog because it was aggressive due to “terrible abuse.” The Brooklyn shelter where Dunham got the dog disputed Dunham’s claim saying the dog did not have a history of abuse or aggressive behavior.

She has also written that she wishes she had an abortion. “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.” After she was roundly criticized for the statement, she claimed it was a “distasteful joke.”

What do you make of Dunham’s announcement that she’s shutting down her site? Is this a case of Get Woke Go Broke?
