Report: Legends of Zelda TV Show in The Works

A new report indicates that a Legends of Zelda television show could be in the works.

Producer Adi Shankar took to Instagram to tease that he’s working with “an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series.” Shankar is a prolific producer. He produced Dredd, The Grey, Lone Survivor, and is currently producing the Castlevania anime series on Netflix. Shankar indicates this opportunity was only made possible due to the success of Castlevania.

While Shankar indicated he would make a complete reveal on November 16th, The Wrap indicates the iconic series is the Legends of Zelda. However, Nintendo commented on their story stating, “We have nothing to announce on this topic.”

It’s possible the series could be the Legends of Zelda, but there are plenty of other iconic Japanese gaming companies that have iconic video game series. It’s possible it could be a Square Enix and a Final Fantasy series. Given the cinematic nature of the Final Fantasy series it wouldn’t be too hard to see it adapted into an anime or a live-action television series. In fact, Final Fantasy has spawned a number of movies.

Another possibility is Capcom’s Street Fighter. Street Fighter is no stranger to an adaptation as the series saw a live-action film made in 1994 starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

If in fact, the report from The Wrap is true, it wouldn’t be the first time the Legend of Zelda is turned into a television series. Back in 1989, The Legend of Zelda was adapted into an animated series by DIC Animation City and distributed by Viacom Enterprises. The series was thirteen episodes long.

The Legend of Zelda was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. It is one of the most iconic Nintendo franchises and one that I’ve spent hours playing through countless games.  The original game debuted in 1986 and there have been over 17 sequels since then. The story, for the most part, keeps a few basic elements for each title. It sees the adventures of a hero named Link. He sets out on a mission to collect magical artifacts to save Princess Zelda from the clutches of an evil wizard named Ganon.
