Child’s Play Release Date Announced with New Poster

Orion Pictures announced the release date for their upcoming reboot of Child’s Play that stars Aubrey Plaza.

Orion Pictures President John Hegeman announced the film will hit theaters nationwide on June 21, 2019. Along with the release date they also revealed a brand new poster with the tagline, “More than a toy…He’s your best friend.”

They also unveiled another tag line in their press release, “Meet your new best friend…til the end.” The announcement comes after Orion Pictures gave us our first look at the new Chucky.

The film is being directed by Lars Klevberg based off a screenplay by Kung Fury’s Tyler Burton Smith. Orion Pictures describes the film as a “contemporary version of the iconc classic Child’s Play.”

The film will star Aubrey Plaza as Karen. Brian Tyree Henry as Mike, And Gabriel Bateman as Andy. They will be joined by Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke.

Child’s Play is being produced by the David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith under their KatzSmith Productions banner. Katzenberg and Grahame-Smith are no strangers to the horror genre having just produced last year’s remake of It which brought in over $700 million at the global box office. Aaron Schmidt and Chris Ferguson will join the team as executive producers.

The official description for the film is short and terrifyingly sweet.

Child’s Play follows a mother who gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.”

Rumors indicate the film will give Chucky a different origin from the original 1988 film. In this new version Chucky will reportedly be “a defective ‘Buddy doll’ whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.” Chucky was originally a “Good Guy” doll that was possessed by serial killer Charles Lee Ray after he performed a Haitian Vodou spell.

This upcoming remake will not feature the original creative team of producing partner David Kirschner, writer Don Mancini, and actor Brad Dourif.

Are you looking forward to this Child’s Play remake? Do you think the original creative team should have been included?
