Jude Law Confirms Whether or Not He’s Playing Captain Marvel

Jude Law finally answered one of the biggest questions surrounding the upcoming Captain Marvel. Is Jude Law Captain Marvel?

Law sat down with his Vox Lux co-star and Marvel alum, Natalie Portman, for Wired’s popular Autocomplete Interviews. The second question Law is asked is whether or not he is Captain Marvel.

Law responds to the question stating, “No I’m not. Brie Larson is Captain Marvel. Am I allowed to say that? I’m just going to make sure the Marvel police aren’t going to shoot me. No, I can say that.”

While Law’s answer seems straight forward there is potentially much more to this story than meets the eye. While it is obvious that Brie Larson will be playing Captain Marvel for anyone who has seen any of the promotional material including the two trailers, Larson is specifically playing Carol Danvers, one of a number of Captain Marvel’s found in the Marvel Universe.

It’s more than likely that Jude Law isn’t playing Captain Marvel, but it’s quite possible he could be playing the original Captain Marvel in the comics, the Kree hero Mar-Vell. Mar-Vell would actually be both a friend and mentor to Carol Danvers, who eventually takes on the mantle of Captain Marvel.

Given Law’s statement, it’s more than likely that if he is in fact playing Mar-Vell, Mar-Vell won’t be Captain Marvel.

And there is some significant evidence pointing to the fact that Law is playing Mar-Vell. The official Disney website actually had tagged law as Mar-Vell, the leader of Starforce, in a recent photo upload.

However, there’s also a big possibility that Law isn’t just playing Mar-Vell, he could also be playing famed Captain Marvel villain, Yon-Rogg.

A number of toys including Funko POP! as well as a Marvel Legends action figure have revealed that Yon-Rogg is more than likely going to show up in Captain Marvel. Even more interesting is the Marvel Legends action figure describes Yon-Rogg as the leader of Starforce.

Marvel Legends Yon-Rogg

As you can see in the description in the photo, Yon-Rogg is described as the leader of Starforce.

This information indicates that Jude Law might actually be playing both characters, or what’s more likely is the idea that Law is playing Yon-Rogg, who is actually impersonating Mar-Vell. It wouldn’t be the first time Yon-Rogg took on a different identity. When he confronted Carol Danvers in the comics, he took on the name of Magnitron.

However, if we take Law at his words and don’t try to read into his answer, it’s more than likely he is not playing Mar-Vell at all, but rather is Yon-Rogg.

In a past interview on The Late Late Show, Law has stated that Larson is the person playing Captain Marvel. He even opened up about the fact he couldn’t even tell his own children the name of the character he was playing:

“I can’t tell you anything.” … “I can tell you Brie Larson plays Marvel. Captain Marvel. My kids were literally jumped on because they hadn’t signed these contracts when we went in. I’m just showing them around having a happy family day out. They got leapt on and paperwork flashed in front of them. So they kind of know what’s going on but I wasn’t allowed to tell them the name. I’m one of those people, if you say a little bit, you say everything. So I just have to keep quiet about everything. I haven’t told anyone my name in it even or anything.”

It seems that with everything related to Marvel movies, the secrets are being held closely. What do you think? Is Jude Law playing word games? Or is he in fact not any version of Captain Marvel? Let me know in the comments below.

Captain Marvel opens in theaters March 8th of this year.
