Captain Marvel Projected to Have Massive Opening Weekend with $140 Million Plus

Marvel Studios and Disney might have another box office juggernaut on their hand with recent projections indicating Captain Marvel could bring in $140 million or more on opening weekend.
If this prediction is correct, Captain Marvel could potentially have the highest opening weekend on record in March, which is currently held by Beauty and the Beast which made over $174 million.
Last week, Fandango reported that Captain Marvel was the third highest selling Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in the first 24 hours behind Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.
Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis reported:
“We’re seeing fantastic advance ticket sales for ‘Captain Marvel’ because it’s a historic film for Marvel Studios, one that fans have been waiting to see for a decade. As the studio’s first female-driven superhero film, ‘Captain Marvel’ is a benchmark moment for the genre, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and for star Brie Larson, who will play the most powerful Marvel superhero to date.”
Following Fandango’s reporting on early ticket sales Box Office Pro released their long-range tracking predictions where they estimated the opening weekend could bring in between $140 and $180 million.
The projections cite Captain Marvel being a “female-driven film” along with Larson’s Carol Danvers being the “franchise’s most powerful superhero yet” are key in bringing in a big box office opening weekend.
They also note the return of Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg deepen “the connection to past and future Marvel films.” In fact, they make note that the nostalgia factor could play into bringing millennials and Gen-Xers into theaters given the film is set in the 1990s.
They do note that one of the factors for Captain Marvel’s success is its perception as a lead into Avengers: Endgame. They compare it to last year’s Black Panther:
“On top of representing the first female-led film in the series, the character’s tease at the end of Avengers: Infinity War — as well as the likelihood of connecting the dots between that film and May’s forthcoming Avengers: Endgame — may serve to give this origin story a higher “must see” factor (ala Black Panther) than most origin films.”
Interestingly enough, they don’t factor in the connection to Guardians of the Galaxy as both Ronan and Korath the Pursuer are expected to play significant roles in Captain Marvel. Ronan and Korath were the two main antagonists in the first Guardians of the Galaxy Film.
Box Office Pro also factors in their own survey which indicates 89 percent of people surveyed reported they are “definitely interested” or “interested” in seeing Captain Marvel based on the trailers.
The Space Stone
Captain Marvel will more than likely connect to Avengers: Endgame in some way. Samuel L. Jackson recently confirmed that the Space Stone aka the Tesseract will show up in the movie, “Seems like the Tesseract has been the constant in all these movies.”
Not only did Jackson confirm the Space Stone showing up in Captain Marvel, he also indicated that Carol Danvers has the ability to time travel.
“She’s one of the few people in the Marvel universe that can time travel, so…”
It might be possible that Carol’s time travel ability might result in an interaction with the Tesseract. We know the Tesseract can be used to travel through space in the same time frame as seen with the Chitauri army in The Avengers and later with the Red Skull and Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. It’s possible Carol’s powers combined with the Tesseract could grant her the ability to not only travel through space, but through time as well.
