James Gunn Returns to Twitter With Now-Deleted Cryptic Post

Last year, James Gunn was fired from Disney and effectively the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) including Guardians of the Galaxy. Since then he has had meetings with Alan Horn, the VP for Disney Entertainment. For the most part, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has been mum when it came to Gunn’s situation.

Most recently Gunn was back in the headlines as he was contracted to write and direct an upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Not only that, but the Superman-esque Brightburn trailer dropped with Gunn’s name attached as director.

With Gunn back in the news, Kevin Feige addressed the director’s move to DC at the Golden Globes.

I went to see [DC’s] Aquaman last night and I really, really enjoyed it,” Feige said. “I don’t see a rivalry, I see cool things being made. One thing you know about James Gunn, he makes cool things.” Feige also touched on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3., “Guardians will happen. When, where, how?  For a later time.”

Gunn Posts Cryptic Tweet Then Deletes It

And now a mysterious tweet appeared on James Gunn’s feed. Gunn had been silent on Twitter since being ousted by Disney back in July.

The tweet in question might’ve originally been a draft in response to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actor David Hasselhoff, who shared the news that his pet bird had been eaten by an owl.

Perhaps this might be the director’s return to the spotlight. With two movies on his docket, this might be a subtle way for Gunn to get back into the conversation. But with the cryptic tweet, it’s hard to say what he might be talking about.

The Movie No One Wants to Direct

I think it’s more a taboo thing for a director to step up to the plate to take on a project that Gunn has so closely kept to himself. That’s why we haven’t seen a number of directors talking about being approached for the third Guardians film. There were some directors here and there talked about helming the movie, but nothing really panned out. The almost nail in the coffin for the movie came with the utter halt to production and the crew being released to do other work for the foreseeable future.

At this point we might see a Gambit movie released before Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

There were rumors of [easyazon_link identifier=”B07L6N8ZJT” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Bumblebee[/easyazon_link] director Travis Knight taking on the director chair for GOTG3. Fans of the franchise have been clamoring for either James Gunn to be reinstated as director, or for Marvel contemporary Taika Waititi to helm the project.

The Bigger Picture

Gunn’s involvement in the DC Universe will be an interesting one, as his past twitter feed was infamously a quagmire of distasteful jokes about pedophilia.

His involvement with the MCU primarily involved shaping the cosmic realm with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He had turned in a script for the third movie and it’s possible he might get credited for the script if the movie is ever made.

However, I do believe Gunn’s involvement with Marvel is far from over. He had some hand in what happened to the Guardians in Avengers: Endgame. Also there’s still some question about his involvement with the upcoming Captain Marvel film. He was being tapped to head the MCU cosmic when the movie began production. One of the producers talked about Gunn’s limited involvement in the film.

“I think he’s read the script, we talked to him about it a little bit. It takes place before a lot of what he’s doing happens. So I’m sure the Skrulls will be a fun toy to play with at some point. But I think we’ve really been able to do our own thing. But we love when James gives input for sure.”

Feige saying Gunn makes cool movies might be a way of him keeping the door open for the director’s return. However, it’s unlikely Gunn will return to Disney any time soon after Alan Horn fired him.

Do you think Gunn could return to Disney and the MCU? What are your hopes for his Suicide Squad movie? What do you make of Gunn’s now-deleted Tweet?
