Avengers: Endgame: Chiwetel Ejiofor Provides Cryptic Answer on Mordo’s Fate

Doctor Strange actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Strange’s friend, Karl Mordo, in the film teased Mordo’s inclusion in Avengers: Endgame.

Ejiofor spoke to MTV News’ Josh Horowitz who asked him whether or not Baron Mordo survived Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War. Ejiofor cryptically responded, “We are going to have to watch the movie when it comes out.” When pressed on the matter, Ejiofor doubled down, “Yeah, I get what you’re asking. I’m saying we’re going to have to watch the movie.” He confirmed he was referring to Avengers: Endgame, “Yeah, exactly.” He added, “I mean there’s no point in me telling you all the things that happened.”

The last we saw of Mordo was in a post-credit scene of [easyazon_link identifier=”B01M5IPE6C” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Doctor Strange[/easyazon_link], where he takes a turn to the dark side. Mordo confronts Benjamin Bratt’s Jonathan Pangborn, who is using magic to heal is paralysis.

Mordo attacks Pangborn and steals his mystical abilities leaving him paralyzed. Mordo explains why he does it, “Because I see at long last what is wrong with the world. Too many sorcerers.”

What’s interesting about the clip is Marvel doesn’t reveal when it actually takes place. Mordo even says, “I’ve been away for many months now and I’ve had a revelation. The true purpose of a sorcerer is to twist things out of their proper shape. Stealing power, perverting nature. Like you.”

It’s quite possible this sequence might take place after Thanos’ snap, and Mordo came to his ideas after Thanos’ snap that whiped out half of all living beings. In order to ensure something like Thanos’ attack can no longer occur, Mordo sets out to remove mystical energy from those he sees as perverting at.

Mordo will more than likely show up in the Doctor Strange sequel. The original Doctor Strange writer C. Robert Cargill will return to team up with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson.

Cargill revealed a number of his ideas for the sequel in a Q&A following a screening of Doctor Strange in Austin, Texas last March. Cargill specifically revealed one of the main villains will be Nightmare. “Nightmare will be the villain,” he said.

Nightmare was once the servant of the being known as Shuma-Gorath. However, he realized he was much too powerful to be a mere servant and he fled Shuma-Gorath by entering the Deam Dimension. He quickly took over the dimension and rapidly grew in power eventually becoming dependent on the fear he caused in order to survive.

While, he appears as a demon-like creature in his own realm he has been known to take on a physical form in the human realm. In fact, in one story arc he becomes Edvard Haberdash and opens up a nightclub called Club Fear. He would use Club Fear to feed off the club goers fears and increase his powers.

As for Baron Mordo’s role in the movie, Cargill revealed:

“Marvel movies work in threes. They also work outside of their threes. Some of the better Marvel films have more than one villain in them. Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it.”

He also discussed Baron Mordo’s comic book arc and how it was one of the main reasons why Ejiofor chose to play Mordo.

“For those of you who have ever read the comics, you know that Baron Mordo has a very particular arc, and that’s something we discussed with Chiwetel while working on the first movie. And part of the reason Chiwetel wanted to play Mordo was because he has a definitive ending as a character and it’s such a fascinating ending. And I do know that whether we’re attached or not, that Marvel plans on working towards that ending and fully realizing Mordo as more than just a cardboard cutout villain, but actually taking him to kind of Loki levels of awesomeness. That’s the goal with him.”
