The upcoming Birds of Prey film is a spin-off to 2016’s Suicide Squad where Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn. The official title of the Birds of Prey film is actually quite a mouthful, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.
Robbie had previously revealed the title on Instagram, and would later go on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to explain the title, “It’s not a very serious movie, so we thought the title should reflect that.” She added, “Birds of Prey makes it sound very serious and then that’s kind of like Harley adding her ‘Hey, don’t worry. I’m in this, too.’”

The Birds of Prey film is being written by Christina Hodson and is directed by Cathy Yan. Joining Robbie’s Harley Quinn will be Jurnee Smollet-Bell’s Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress, and Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya.

The four women are expected to rescue a young girl, who many believe to be Cassandra Cain, from nefarious crime boss, Black Mask, who will be portrayed by Ewan McGregor. However, Black Mask might be the least of their worries as Chris Messina will be portraying the villainous Victor Zsasz.

Filming for the film is currently underway. The movie is expected to hit theaters next year on February 7, 2020.

Early rumors indicate Warner Bros. and DC are counting on success as there might be a trilogy in the works featuring Harley Quinn beginning with Birds of Prey. The rumor indicates Harley will feature in a Gotham City Sirens adaptation alongside Catwoman and Poison Ivy, and then a third film will pit the Birds of Prey against the Gotham City Sirens.
