Matt Reeves Gives A Huge Update on The Batman

Director Matt Reeves is finally opening up about The Batman after such a long spell of rumor and speculation and he confirms a lot of what we have been hearing.
He talked with The Hollywood Reporter about his plans. When asked about his “take” he revealed his film will be a detective story and expanded on that.
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
Reeves said casting will be underway soon, after a brush-up of his screenplay, with what he apropos calls a “Rogues Gallery.”
“The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”
He made no mention of specific villains or Jack O’Connell and the persistent rumor the English thespian will be donning the cape. Reeves did, however, offer an update on a release. His best guess is in line with where frequent delays land the film.
“We haven’t been dated. I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.”
That last sentence reflects Warner Head Toby Emmerich’s sentiment that the next DC slate is a fresh start at Warner for the Extended Universe. It probably won’t be called that anymore, claims Reeves, who went further.
“What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know. Aquaman is going to be very different from the Todd Phillips Joker movie, and that’s going to be different from Shazam and Harley Quinn. Warners believes they don’t have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it’s going to connect.”
Things will connect, at least in Shazam! which takes place in the world established by Zack Snyder, and possibly Wonder Woman 1984. From there, it sounds like everything will pick up in separate continuities starting with Joker.
Reeves also stated that “The Batman” is a working title. The story is meant to be a personal one that resonates today and it will keep him too busy to even think about another Planet of the Apes film.
Ben Affleck will not be taking part in Reeves’ Batman film. The actor made that very clear in a Tweet he made on Wednesday night.
