DuVernay started her Tweets about “white privilege” by targeting First Lady Melania Trump sharing an image from her modeling career where she was featured in GQ magazine in 2001. Duvernay stated, “When people ask me what white privilege is… Imagine what would happen if this was Michelle.”

DuVernay would then move onto Liam Neeson, who recently opened up about a time in his life where he sought revenge after discovering one of his friends was brutally raped. She insinuated that Will Smith’s acting career might be over if he made similar claims.

DuVernay then Tweeted about Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in 2012. Zimmerman was cleared of all charges after the state of Florida charged him with second-degree murder. After he was cleared, his defense attorney declared, “George Zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in self-defense.”

DuVernay would then go on to explain “white privilege” and why she posted the three Tweets stating, “My three posts below are real world, easy examples of how the system we live in favors some and not others.”

What do you make of DuVernay’s comments on “white privilege?” Do you agree with her that the “system we live in favors some and not others?”
