Birds of Prey: First On-Set Look at Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress

After behind-the-scenes leaks of what Margot Robbie looks like on the set of Birds of Prey, now it is time for co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead to shine. Social media is littered with shots of Winstead in costume as The Huntress, a mainstay of the female team of vigilantes for many years.

These are the first looks at Winstead off camera. We caught glimpses of her in a 20-second teaser, showcasing Robbie as Harley and much of the rest of the cast, that dropped last month. In it, Winstead shows off Huntress’s trademark cloak and crossbow she sports in the comics, and in sporadic Arrow appearances on the CW (where she was played by Jessica De Gouw).

Below are a few snapshots of Winstead and her full costume courtesy of the Twitter account Birds of Prey Movie Updates.

There are even a few of Winstead between takes and she appears to be having a good time.

She plays Helena Bertinelli, the dual identity of Huntress post-Crisis that is the most notable incarnation. A former rogue, Bertinelli appeared first in her own comic in 1989. In later years, Helena was depicted in the Arrowverse as the vengeful daughter of a crime boss, and once took on the mantle of Batgirl.

Huntress itself is a moniker borne by a few characters since the 1960s. At first, it belonged to Helena Wayne, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman residing on Golden Age Earth-2. Wayne was brought back on occasion including for 2002’s Birds of Prey TV series on the WB, played by Ashley Scott. She was portrayed as a Metahuman with enhanced reflexes and strength who had no use for crossbows.

If you’re a purist who must have a Huntress with a weapon, then, fortunately, Winstead has you covered as Bertinelli.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) comes out on February 7th, 2020. Directed by Cathy Yan, it stars Margot Robbie (also an executive producer) in her return to the role of Harley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as psycho Zsasz, and Ewan MacGregor as the ultimate villain, mobster Black Mask.
