Critics Rave Over Captain Marvel in First Reactions – We’ve Seen This Before

Critics are getting to see Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jude Law for the first time and their reactions are nothing short of ecstatic for the film.

Entertainment Weekly’s Devan Coogan described the film as “pure joy.”

Mashable’s Angie J. Han is already demanding a spin-off film with Nick Fury and Captain Marvel’s cat Goose.

Entertainment Tonight’s Ash Crossan describes the film as “TOTALLY AWESOME.”

Collider’s Steven Weintraub describes the movie as “really well done with some great moments.”

Fandango’s Erik Davis describes it as “retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in suprising places & badass in all the right places.”

Slash Film’s Peter Sciretta described it as a “great origin story” and that it is the “MCU’s most multilayered villain story.”

The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzales says the film “ABSOLUTELY SOARS!”

MovieFone’s Drew Taylor describes the film as “beautifully constructed, hilarious and offers tons of surprises.”

IGN’s Jim Vejvoda described it as “a lot of fun.”

Ben Mekler describes the film as “RADICAL” and reveals their is a Winter Soldier cameo. Although this might be a joke as he states Brie Larson only has “10 mins of screen time sandwiched between full episodes of America’s favorite sitcom, Friends.”

While these are all mostly rave reviews, we’ve seen this type of reaction from critics who get to see an early release before.

Slash Film documented initial responses to Ryan Reynolds’ 2011 Green Lantern film with the headline “Early Buzz: First Screening of ‘Green Lantern’ Earns Positive Praise.”

The reactions were very similar to what we are seeing about Captain Marvel.

The film would eventually receive a 26% Critic Rating and 45% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

ScreenRant would report on early reaction to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with a headline that reads, “Batman v Superman Premiere: Early Reactions are Overwhelmingly Positive.”

Just like Green Lantern and Captain Marvel it had people praising the film.

The film would receive a 27% Critic rating and a 63% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Justice League would receive similar treatment. This Insider would state in their headline, “Early reviews of Justice League say it’s ‘fun’ – but it’s no slam dunk.”

The film would receive a 40% Critics Score and a 73% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

And maybe the most notable film to receive extremely positive early reactions, but divide audiences after they saw it was Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

i09 reported with their headline, “The First Impressions for Star Wars: The Last Jedi Are Overwhelmingly Good.”

The movie would receive a 91% Critics Rating but a 45% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While initial reactions for Captain Marvel might be glowing, there is reason to believe the film might not be as cracked up as initial reactions indicate.

We’ll all find out how good Captain Marvel really is when it hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
