Ian McKellen Says Kevin Spacey & Bryan Singer Allegedly Abused People Because They ‘Were in the Closet’

X-Men and Lord of the Rings star Ian McKellen claimed Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer allegedly abused people because “both of them were in the closet.”
McKellen worked with Bryan Singer on a number of the X-Men films where he played Magneto as well as the 1998 film Apt Pupil. McKellen also worked with Spacey at the Old Vic Theatre. Spacey served as the artistic director from 2003-2015, where Variety reports the theatre uncovered “20 accounts of alleged inappropriate behavior.”
McKellen recently appeared on the #QueerAF podcast during National Student Pride 2019 where he discussed the allegations against Kevin Spacey and director Bryan Singer.
He stated both men allegedly abused people because they were not open about their sexuality. In fact, McKellen states they wouldn’t have allegedly abused people if they were open about their sexuality.
“Hence all their problems as people and their relationships with other people. If they had been able to be open about themselves and their desires, they wouldn’t have started abusing people in the way they’re being accused.”
McKellen would also address the #MeToo movement describing it as “difficult to be absolutely black and white.”
He would elaborate:
“Whether they should be forced to stop working, that’s debatable. I think that’s rather up to the public. Do you want to see someone who’s been accused of something that you don’t approve of? Do you ever want to see them again? If the answer is no, you won’t buy a ticket, you won’t turn on the television. But there may be others for whom that’s not a consideration.”
Both Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey have had a long history of alleged abuse.
Kevin Spacey has been accused of sexual assault and charges were brought against the actor in Los Angeles County. Following the accusations, Spacey was fired from Netflix’s House of Cards and he is under investigation in both the United States and Europe.
Spacey was initially accused by Star Trek: Discovery star Anthony Rapp who claimed Spacey made advances against him when he was 14.
Spacey responded to Rapp’s accusations by coming out as a gay man.

Singer has been accused of sexual misconduct and assault for a number of years. Most recently new accusations surfaced in an article in The Atlantic. Those accusations have seemingly put the anticipated Red Sonja film on hold. Singer was attached to direct the movie.
