Report: Female-Centric Rush Hour Reboot in Development

STX Studios is reportedly developing a female-centric Rush Hour reboot.

Rush Hour originally starred Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as a Hong Kong Inspector and a L.A.P.D. detective, who have to rescue a Chinese diplomat’s daughter and deal with a dangerous crime lord. The film was a buddy cop comedy that spawned two sequels as well as TV series starring Justin Hires and John Foo. However, the TV series was cancelled after just one season.

A report from That Hashtag Show indicates STX Studios is working on a female-centric reboot with Bingbing Li taking on Jackie Chan’s role. Li played Su Yueming in [easyazon_link identifier=”B00L83TMIE” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Transformers: Age of Extinction[/easyazon_link]and most recently played Suyin in [easyazon_link identifier=”B07JJ16QBT” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]The Meg[/easyazon_link]. Their report does not indicate who would be her counterpart.

A Rush Hour 4 was reportedly in the works with both Chan and Tucker. Jackie Chan confirmed he had signed onto Rush Hour 4 back in October of 2017 telling 106’s The Cruz Show, “For the last seven years, we’ve been turning down the script, turning down the script. Yesterday, we just agreed.”

However, he noted that Tucker wasn’t on board yet, “The script probably at the end of this month will have a second draft and next year, [we’ll] probably start. If… Chris Tucker agrees.”

Tucker confirmed his involvement in the film in February of last year.

Tucker would provide an update to fans on the film during an interview on the Winging It podcast in January. He would state, “We’re working on a few things on the script right now, so we’re trying to get into production, but we’re working on it and trying to get it going. Jackie Chan wants to do it, I want to do it, the studio wants to do it, so we’re trying to get it together.”

Tucker would add,”I was definitely down as long as it comes together right – and it looks like it’s coming together right.”

It’s kind of odd to hear a report about a female-centric Rush Hour as Tucker and Chan are working on a Rush Hour 4. It’s possible it could be a Rush Hour spin-off rather than a reboot. And it would make a lot more sense if these characters introduced in the new Rush Hour 4 and then spun off into their own film.

What do you make of this report? Are you interested in a female-centric Rush Hour reboot? Are you excited for a Rush Hour 4?
