Disney’s Captain Marvel Brings in $61.3 Million on Friday

Disney’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson reportedly brought in $61.3 million on Friday.

According to Box Office Mojo’s Saturday morning update, “Captain Marvel delivered an estimated $61.3 million on Friday, including $20.7 million from Thursday night previews.”

That means Friday doubled Captain Marvel’s take on Thursday. With a $61.3 million opening day gross, Captain Marvel ranks 27th all time. The film’s opening day gross is behind other Marvel Cinematic Universe films such as Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Captain Marvel doesn’t really face any competition at the box office. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral each brought in over $3 million on Friday. Alita: Battle Angel only brought in an estimated $800,000.

Captain Marvel has brought in the money from the global box office. Box Office Mojo estimates the film made $127 million through Friday with $34.3 million from China. They state this is “the second highest MCU opening day in the market ever behind only Avengers: Infinity War.”

Disney’s estimated projection of the film making $150 million in its opening weekend is lining up with most estimates as Box Office Mojo projects it will finish its three-day opening weekend between $145 million and $155 million.

The film is still plagued with controversy. Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score currently sits at 52% from over 33,000 reviews. However the critic score has decreased to 79%.

Metacritic’s user score sits at 2.9 with over 1200 negative reviews and only a tad over 350 positive reviews. Their critic score sits at 65 with 31 positive reviews and one negative review.

CinemaScore, who describes itself as “the industry leader in measuring movie appeal among theatre audiences,” has given Captain Marvel an A rating.

CinemaScore describes their rating system ” can range from A+ to F. Each opening weekend, CinemaScore polls moviegoers directly at theatres across North America, including Canada. Pollsters provide audience members a ballot with six questions—including an A to F grade scale, purchase and rental interest and demographic data.”
