Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Brings Home $153 Million at Domestic Box Office

Disney and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel brought home over $153 million on its opening weekend according to Box Office Mojo, topping Disney’s opening weekend expectation of $150 million.
Captain Marvel would trounce its competition at the box office with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World bringing in $14.7 million in its third week. It would be followed by Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral which brought in over $12 million in its second week. Alita: Battle Angel would bring in $3.2 million in its fourth week.
Captain Marvel’s $153 million opening weekend makes it the third all time in March behind Beauty and the Beast and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It just barely edged out The Hunger Games. The film has the second highest opening weekend gross for a superhero origin film behind Black Panther as listed by Box Office Mojo. The movie falls to 11th in total openings for superhero films behind The Dark Knight, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers, and Iron Man 3, and others.
The film would bring in over $303 million at the global box office. Box Office Mojo reports this is the “fifth highest international opening weekend of all-time and the sixth largest worldwide debut ever.” The film reportedly brought in $89.3 million in China.
Captain Marvel’s opening weekend worldwide box office take was $456.3 million.
Captain Marvel was positioned expertly by Disney and Marvel Studios to maximize its box office revenue. The film teased the titular superhero, Captain Marvel, at the end of its mega blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War. The post-credits scene in that film heavily implied the character would be a big player in the Avengers fight against Thanos moving forward. The film debuted just a little over a month before Avengers: Endgame, where we will see the conclusion to the Avengers fight against Thanos.
What’s interesting is that Box Office Mojo indicates the film’s audience breakdown showed that 55% of audience goers were male and 45% were female. They report this “is the smallest gender divide among films in the MCU, but nowhere near the 52% female crowd Wonder Woman played to back in June 2017. 64% of audience goers were also 25 or older. Box Office Mojo notes this “ranks as one of the older audiences for an MCU film.”
There has been quite the controversy surrounding the film especially in the way lead actress Brie Larson promoted the film. She indicated the film was her form of activism. She would go on to insinuate she wanted less white men reviewing the film and covering her on the press tour. She would go on to crack jokes about the patriarchy and inject politics into the promotion of the film describing it as a “big feminist movie” and that the movie is about “intersectional feminism.”
The film would also receive mixed reviews from audience goers. The movie currently has a 58% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.4 User Score on Metacritic. The movie did receive an “A” from CinemaScore.
