Though Star Wars prequel and Trainspotting actor Ewan McGregor plays Black Mask, the major bad guy in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), we still haven’t seen him wear the iconic skull mask.

New set photos, unfortunately, don’t buck that trend. However, we see more of him working with his castmates, such as these shots showing him and Ella Jay Basco (who plays little Cassandra Cain) between takes. Despite no skeletal visage, McGregor looks to be in costume, wearing a velvet colored suit coat with blood running down his face.

More photos show off cars of classic designs that are the signature of the Gotham gangster, fond as he is of vehicles and clothes with a charm circa the 1940s. The heavy machinery is part of a scene (minor spoiler) being filmed at the Warner Studio Backlot. And Harley is involved.

His clothes and those cars, if they are his, impart the idea director Cathy Yan is trying to capture the essence of Black Mask, at least. She could have a plan for the skull that will come out later. It’s possible Birds of Prey is an origin story for Mask as well as the team.

In comics, Roman Sionis becomes a criminal after the collapse of his cosmetics company. He forges his trademark ghoulish headpiece from pieces of his father’s coffin. The skull became fused to his face in battle with Batman due to a combination of fire and a miscalculation by the Dark Knight.

Ewan might put the mask on for a fight in the final act that leads to it staying attached thanks to one of the Birds, probably Harley Quinn. We will all find out on or before February 7, 2020, when the film hits theaters.

Directed by Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie as Harley, Jurnee Smollet-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, Chris Messina as Zsasz, and Ella Basco as Cassie Cain, who allegedly brings the team together when she takes something from Mask.
