Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige Confirms Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel to Take the Lead in Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel will take the lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

According to Uproxx, Feige confirmed Larson’s Carold Danvers will be at the forefront of the MCU in the Captain Marvel: The Official Movie Special guide.

Feige states:

“When we found out that Brie Larson might be interested in joining our world, we had a number of meetings. She was a huge fan of the character in the comics. One of the highlights of my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing – not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.”

Interestingly, Larson had no idea who Captain Marvel actually was when it was announced she would be playing the character back in 2016.

In an interview with MTV News, Larson questioned, “Isn’t that a boy?” She would continue, “So would I be playing a man? This is interesting. I’m kind of into it. I thought I was always forever going to be stuck playing female roles. I’m down to play Chris Evans. Oh Wai, Chris Evans is Captain America. Who is Captain Marvel?” She would add, “I have no idea what I’m talking about. Great, but people want me to play this. I guess I’ve got to start reading the comic book.”

It’s no surprise to die hard followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that a change was coming after Avengers: Endgame. Feige has been pretty upfront that Avengers: Endgame would have a definitive end. In an interview with the Toronto Sun last July, Feige stated:

“But, storylines can come to an end. The best stories do come to an end. Return of the Jedi was an ending for a long time and as a 10-year-old in 1983 that carried me through 30 years until there was a sequel. That hasn’t happened before in the superhero genre. A new actor comes in and a new storyline starts right away. We wanted to do it this way because we think that the best stories have a definitive ending to a storyline. That’s certainly what’s going to happen next year with Avengers 4.”

Feige also stated in June that the MCU would be featuring different incarnations of characters you know as well as completely new characters you hadn’t heard of unless you were a comic book fan. Many took this as a hint that many of Marvel’s powerhouse characters would be saying goodbye including Iron Man and Captain America.

Actor Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, heavily hinted that he’s done with the role following Avengers: Endgame. He did so when he posted a tweet confirming he had finished filming Avengers: Endgame.

As for Robert Downey, Jr., Den of Geek reports his contract is up following Avengers: Endgame, but they leave the door open that it could be renegotiated. Downey, Jr. has been a major player in eight MCU films.

Downey did talk of leaving with News Corp Australia Network in 2017, “I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [MCU movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.” However, it’s unclear when that will be as the Joe Russo told Cinemablend, “He never mentioned to us about leaving Iron Man, but it will happen at some point of time.”

Thor’s Chris Hemsworth’s contract is also up with Avengers: Endgame, but he’s hinted that he would like to come back and do a follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok with director Taika Waititi.

With Captain America and most likely Iron Man either being killed or riding off into the sunset with Avengers: Endgame, it appears Feige has his eyes on Captain Marvel to assume their roles as leader of the Avengers.
