Producer Peter Safran: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Is “Total Reboot”

Aquaman and Shazam! producer Peter Safran confirmed James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad is a “total reboot.”

In an interview with Jo Blo, Safran confirmed that the James Gunn written and directed Suicide Squad film will be a reboot.

Safran clearly stated:

“First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”

This confirms my own suspicions after Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment announced the film would be titled The Suicide Squad.

Peter Safran would also state that The Suicide Squad film will not be affected by the recent announcement by Gunn that he was rehired by Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In fact, he states Gunn will work on The Suicide Squad before moving onto Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“No, it was all handled incredibly elegantly and everybody knows on both sides that Suicide Squad is the priority today and he’ll finish that movie and then everybody knows that his next film will be Guardians. It’s the best of all possible both worlds, I think, for fans and for James Gunn himself.”

Given The Suicide Squad is a total reboot, it’s more than likely the rumors about Idris Elba replacing Will Smith as Deadshot might be just that; rumors. While Deadshot is a mainstay on Amanda Waller’s Task Force X, given DC Entertainment is rebooting the franchise less than three years from the original film, one would expect they would use different characters. Elba might be on board, but it’s possible he’s not playing Deadshot.

It also makes sense that this is a total reboot given the film is expected to hit theaters on August 6, 2021. That means production will be starting relatively soon with recent reports suggesting they will begin in September in Atlanta. That most likely means Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn might not be part of the film given she’s still shooting Birds of Prey.

I expect Gunn to dive into the treasure trove of DC Comics characters that are available to him. It’s already rumored he might be bringing in Dave Bautista to play Peacemaker. Other possibilities for Gunn’s new Task Force X could include Killer Frost, Bronze Tiger, Count Vertigo, Plastique, King Shark, and Multiplex.

Now that we know Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is a “total reboot,” which characters do you want to see on Task Force X? Would you want to see any of the original squad from David Ayer’s movie return?
