Report: Ezra Miller Wants to Write His Flash Movie with Grant Morrison

THe Flash

Ezra Miller still wants to reprise his role as The Flash in a standalone adventure despite the critical failure of 2017’s Justice League. The film he’s been set to star in since around 2016 remains stuck in development, under threat of being dropped entirely.

But Miller, tenaciously passionate about the project, offered a solution. The Hollywood Reporter is saying he wants to write the screenplay, and reportedly take the tone in a darker direction. To help him, he is enlisting Grant Morrison.

Miller is said to be under contract until May, which doesn’t leave him and Morrison much time. No plot details are leaking at the moment but their script could be turned in this week. If the studio doesn’t like the treatment, he could walk and The Flash might be done for.

However, Miller did speak about his ideas for a Flash movie recently:

“We are talking about sparking a whole new universe, which is not just the DC Multiverse. It’s also, it’s the Speedster Multiverse. And the Speedsters are the ones who connect all of the disparate pieces. Because Marvel is a universe, just one world and all the same characters in it. DC is a multiverse. All these different stories with different realities, different characters, and different versions of characters, and the Speedsters are the ones who move through it all. They are like the connecting bridge between all these different collaged parts.”

A difference in vision could prove to be the trigger if that happens. Warner Bros. wants to keep things light and fun since Aquaman — a fantasy-adventure that is very much both — was so profitable and Shazam! is generating buzz for its levity. “Dark and brooding” might not have a spot in the studio’s lexicon anymore, so they could dismiss Miller and Morrison out of hand, no matter what they come up with.

A dark, gritty tone and flat-grey palate didn’t work for Superman anymore than a shared universe. Warner is trying to distance itself from Zack Snyder and Justice League by way of a reset, or “revamp,” of its DC movie-verse but they are holding onto Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, and quite possibly Henry Cavill. Miller obviously wants to remain in that fold, even if he has to keep himself there.

The group, however, is getting smaller. Ben Affleck stepped away and now Ray Fisher, someone excited to be part of Snyder’s vision, is reportedly out too. His solitary turn as Cyborg isn’t happening. Keeping a few Leaguers around would be nice but could be pointless without the full line-up.
