Shazam! Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic Score Announced

Director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! had an early release courtesy of Fandango and critic reviews are already pouring in. The official Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores have been revealed and it’s looking very good for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s latest comic book film.
The Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score is currently sitting at 93% from 44 reviews. 41 of the reviews are marked fresh while 3 are marked rotten.
Here’s what some of the critics are saying:
TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde writes, “Captures the original comics’ combination of breezy heroism and nutty plotting, transferred from the 1940s to the modern era with great skill.”
Benjamin Lee of The Guardian writes, “Buoyant and unpretentious, Shazam! aims low and mostly succeeds, a kid-friendly caper powered with enough energy to keep its target audience engaged with a fun central conceit that plays like a cross between Big and Superman.”
Newsday’s Rafer Guzman add his thoughts, “A welcome antidote to the usual brooding DC fare, an upbeat superhero movie that feels young at heart.”
The Associated Press’ Lindsey Bahr writes, “”Shazam!” is just a lightning bolt of unexpected joy that is certainly worth your time and money.”
Not everyone was feeling the love.
Evan Dossey at Midwest Film Journal bluntly wrote, “Lightening doesn’t even strike once in “Shazam!”
Rachel Wagner at Rachel’s Reviews says, “It has fun moments but was unnecessarily violent for the tone they were going for.”
Tim Grierson at Screen International writes, “”Shazam” exudes a boyish spirit appropriate for a superhero origin story about a teenager who gets invested with powers far beyond his adolescent imagination. This latest DC adventure is, however, a mixed bag that doesn’t quite work.”
Over at Metacritic the Metascore from critics currently sits at 79 with 16 positive reviews and 1 mixed reviews.
Keith Uhlich at The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Proves so determinedly ebullient you begin to think they’re pumping laughing gas into the auditorium. The most kid-friendly DC movie so far, the film is thoroughly entertaining.
Alex Abad-Santos at Vox writes, “Shazam’s tale of orphans and wizardry is not perfect — Sivana is a stylish but ultimately forgettable menace — but it’s pretty close.
Jim Vejvoda at IGN writes, “Shazam! is a lot of fun and it further proves how, in the wake of the success of Wonder Woman and Aquaman, DC’s movie future is indeed bright. Zachary Levi was born to play this superpowered man-child, delivering lots of laughs alongside sarcastic but amiable co-star Jack Dylan Grazer.
Based on critics reviews it looks like Sandberg and company should have quite a hit on their hands.
Audience Scores for both Rotten Tomatoes and MetaCritic are currently unavailable as the movie does not officially release until April 5th despite early screenings happening on March 23rd.
