Hellboy Flames Out at Box Office in Opening Weekend

Lionsgate and Summit’s newly release Hellboy reboot starring David Harbour flamed out during its opening weekend at the box office.

The film only grossed a touch over $12 million in its opening weekend falling behind Little and DC Entertainment’s Shazam!, who remained #1 at the box office for the second straight week.

Box Office Mojo estimates Hellboy had a $50 million production budget, so it’s nowhere near being profitable after its opening weekend.

Our source had previously provided us information that Lionsgate was expecting Hellboy to bring in $20 million on its opening weekend and go on to make $50 million over the course of its domestic run. Given its opening weekend take, it looks like the film might struggle to reach half of its projected overall domestic gross.

In fact, this is the worst opening weekend for a Hellboy movie ever. The first Hellboy movie opened at $23.1 million and would go on to earn $59.6 million. The sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army would open to $34.5 million and earn over $75.9 million.

The Hellboy reboot was also panned by critics. The film currently has a 15% Tomatometer rating from 145 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it does seem to be faring a little better with actual audiences as it has a 65% Audience Score.

Hellboy Rotten Tomatoes

Cinemascore reports Hellboy has a C rating from audiences they’ve surveyed.

Possibly adding on to Hellboy’s poor box office performance are the recent comments from the film’s screenwriter Andy Cosby, who decided to attack Donald Trump supporters calling them “smart racists” in the lead up to the film being released.

What do you make of Hellboy’s box office bomb? Do you think this could be the final nail in the coffin for the Hellboy franchise on the big franchise? Do you think this could hurt the possibility of other indie comic books getting adapted to the big screen?
