Admiral Ackbar Voice Actor Tom Kane Roasts Admiral Holdo and Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi

Admiral Ackbar and Yoda voice actor Tom Kane recently roasted Admiral Holdo and Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi during an interview on The Star Wars Show at Star Wars Celebration Chicago over the weekend.

Kane, who voiced Ackbar in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and is the Yoda voice actor on The Clone Wars animated series heavily criticized Rian Johnson’s Admiral Holdo character and The Last Jedi.

Kane would first discuss how he got the role of Ackbar, “It’s a crappy way to get the job, but a lot of these guys are getting older and so I’m also Ackbar now. I’ve been Ackbar for about six years.” He then switches to his Ackbar voice, “The forest moon of Endor will be…It’s a trap! All power to the forward shield!”

Kane then expresses his frustration with how Ackbar was treated in The Last Jedi, “And I was not really thrilled how they blew him out the side of a ship. I’m like who is this Holdo woman? Nobody knows her. No one is invested in her. Who is she? Why is she saving the fleet? If anyone’s going to save the fleet it would be Ack….”

The host then interjects and completely changes the conversation to discussing Kane’s role as Yoda in The Clone Wars and the upcoming season helmed by Dave Filoni.

Kane isn’t the only cast member of The Last Jedi to question the creative decisions made by Lucasfilm and director Rian Johnson. Mark Hamill famously criticized the creative decision made with Luke Skywalker in the film.

Just this past March, Hamill echoed his previous criticisms telling Den of Geek:

“I just thought, Luke’s never going to see his best friend again. You look at it in a self-centred way. I said that it was a big mistake that those three people would never reunite in any way. I guess I was wrong, because nobody seems to care! I have to stipulate that I care, but it didn’t really seem to affect the larger audience. Luke, Han and Leia will never be together again, and I’ll probably never get to work with Harrison again.”

Hamill would also take issue with the fact that Luke Skywalker was killed off in The Last Jedi:

“Then the second thing was that they killed me off. I thought: oh, okay, you should push my death off to the last one. That’s what I was hoping when I came back: no cameos and a run-of-the-trilogy contract. Did I get any of those things? Because as far as I’m concerned, the end of VII is really the beginning of VIII. I got one movie! They totally hornswoggled (tricked) me.”

He even pointed to a scene where Luke is supposed to not recognize C-3PO:

“They had me walking by 3PO, not even acknowledging him. I said: “I can’t do that! He (The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson) said, “Okay, go over and do whatever.” So I went over, and I did whatever. They say it in the script: “Forget the past, kill it if you have to”, and they’re doing a pretty good job!’”

Kane’s criticisms of Admiral Holdo and The Last Jedi are extremely common among the Star Wars fanbase.

Following the release of the film an entire thread on the popular Star Wars subreddit was dedicated to criticizing Admiral Holdo’s characters with users calling her an “ineffectual leader” and “unengaging character.”

One user even noted, “She stole Admiral Ackbars heroic sacrifice.”
