Avengers: Endgame SHATTERS Chinese Pre-Release Sales Record

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame is not only breaking pre-sale records in North America, but it’s also shattering records in China.

The South China Morning Post reports “the movie sold a record 247 million yuan in tickets on Maoyan on Monday for the midnight show on April 24th.” That’s around $36.8 million for just a midnight showing. In fact they indicate the film sold 100 million yuan ($14.8 million) in just the first 10 hours.

Huatei Securities analyst Xu Juan spoke to the paper predicting the film could gross 3 billion yuan or more. 3 billion yuan is $446.9 million. That’s almost double what North American box office predictions for the film are which range from $200 million to $250 million. In fact, Avengers: Endgame could gross more than $750 million in its opening weekend at the global box office.

Xu adds, “China’s box office had a dismal March due to a lack of good films, so [Avengers: Endgame] will help release the pent-up demand.” If Endgame does in fact gross 3 billion yuan it would be nearly the entire gross of March which only grossed 4.14 billion yuan.

The film is extremely popular with postmillennial men in China. 81 percent of the 1.63 million who have indicated they are interested in the film are between the ages of 20 and 34 years old. 57.8 percent of the audience are men.

The global box office has become the place where movies really do or die. Marvel Studios Captain Marvel has only grossed $386.5 million at the domestic box office, but has nearly doubled that gross at the global box office with $677.9 million. Warner Bros. Shazam! sees a similar trend with the film grossing $94.2 million so far at the domestic box office and $164.1 million at the global box office. Aquaman might be even more telling. The film made $335 million at the domestic box office, but an astounding $812.6 million at the global box office.

Needless to say these huge tentpole movies like Avengers: Endgame rake in the dough from the global box office!

Avengers: Endgame releases in China slightly early with an April 24 date. It hits theaters in North America with early showings on Thursday, April 25th.
