X-Men Spin-Off Series ‘The Gifted’ Canceled

The X-Men spin-off series The Gifted starring Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, and Emma Dumont has been canceled by 20th Century Fox TV, which now resides at Disney, after just two seasons.
Deadline reports the show’s second season only “averaged a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating in Live+7, which was half of its Season 1 average (2.0), and 3.3 million viewers.” They did indicate the show performed well in online viewing.
While the show has been canceled, Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva does note “there is a chance for The Gifted to find a new home within the Disney family.”
The cancellation of The Gifted is another blow to Marvel TV led by Jeph Loeb.
Netflix canceled all of their Marvel TV shows including Dardevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher.
Not only were the Netflix shows canceled, but ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will more than likely end after its seventh season. ABC also passed on the opportunity for an all-female Marvel heroes series.
However, Marvel TV did announce a number of politically-charged Marvel animated shows that will culminate in The Offenders.
It’s quite possible Marvel TV might be repurposed into animation as Marvel Studios appears to take the lead on Marvel live-action TV series.
Disney confirmed there will be at least three MCU-focused shows on Disney+. They include one based on Loki starring Tom Hiddleston, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, and WandaVision starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. There are also rumors of a Jeremy Renner led Hawkeye show and a Mark Ruffalo led Hulk and She-Hulk series.
As for the chances of The Gifted finding a new home on one of the other Disney-owned platforms, I think those are slim. Marvel Studios boss and the architect of the MCU Kevin Feige more than likely has plans for the X-Men. Those plans probably involve rebooting them and incorporating them into the MCU in the future. However, he recently stated it would be a “very long time” before the X-Men popped up in the MCU.
