Mortal Kombat 11 References Donald Trump Using Shao Khan

Mortal Kombat 11 decided to reference Donald Trump using their villainous Shao Khan, who is featured as the primary antagonist in a number of Mortal Kombat games.

You can see the context of the phrase in the video below.

For those unfamiliar with Shao Khan, he is the embodiment of evil within the Mortal Kombat universe. Here’s the official description of his character from the Mortal Kombat 11 website:

“Emperor of Outworld. For millennia, Shao Kahn dominated the realms, rapidly expanding his Empire by conquest. But when he set out to claim Earthrealm, he was blocked by the rules of Mortal Kombat. Deterred but determined, Shao Kahn demands absolute victory.”

The clip of Shao Khan using Donald Trump’s now iconic slogan follows after Mortal Kombat 11 decided to get “woke” with Jax’s ending. A number of fans of the Mortal Kombat series have accused NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat 11’s developer, of racism due to the ending.

The game has also faced stiff criticism for the way it has radically altered its female character designs. They have been accused of sexism by Liana Kerzner, and openly critiqued for desexualizing many of the characters. They have defended the radical changes in the character design by claiming it’s more realistic.

Mortal Kombat 11’s Art Director Steve Beran told Polygon:

“Our character lead, Brendan George, has been a breath of fresh air of just introducing new ideas. Our design is just getting more mature and respectful. You’re not going to wear a bikini to a fight. You’re not going to be showing so much skin. I think it’s just what the game is about: You’re going in to fight for your life, and you’re not going to be wearing such scantily clad items.”
