Tara Reid Ends $100 Million ‘Sharknado’ Lawsuit Against SyFy and Asylum Entertainment

Actress Tara Reid has dropped her $100 million ‘Sharknaodo’ lawsuit against Asylum Entertainment and SyFy Media Productions. She was suing for false endorsement and misappropriation of celebrity likeness. She also was suing for common law wrongful appropriation of likeness and breach of written contract.
The Blast notes the court documents read the “action is dismissed by the Plaintiff in its entirety.”
Reid had originally sued the two companies after she claimed they licensed her image to a third party where it was used on slot machines without her permission.
The Blast previously reported Reid accused the companies of licensing her likeness to “manufactures of slot machines, gambling products and beer makers, who in turn have marketed their product with her likeness, and continue to wrongfully trade and profit therefrom.”
People notes Reid’s lawsuit “allege[d] that defendants and each of them without her knowledge and prior written consent misappropriated her likeness for the commercial purpose of endorsing by implication gambling products and alcoholic beverages.”
Reid had stated in her lawsuit that her November 2016 “Performer Engagement Contract” for Sharknado 5 prevented her face from being used in Sharknado. A clause in the contract read that “in no event shall Performer’s likeness be used for any merchandising in association with alcohol, tobacco, gambling, hygiene, or sexual products without Performer’s prior written approval.” The lawsuit claims Reid’s likeness and use on the Sharknado slot machines was not approved nor was there a request for approval.
