Petition Demands Captain Marvel Be Played By Gay Woman of Color – Not Brie Larson

A new petition demands that Captain Marvel be played by a gay woman of color and not actress Brie Larson.

The petition is quite short and to the point. It states:

“We need Brie Larson to step down from her role to prove she is an ally of social justice and ensure a gay woman of color plays the role.”

The petition also indicates that Larson “hasn’t donated to any charity other than The Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation.” The petition’s creator notes “it’s time for her to show she is not all-talk.”

The petition has currently been signed by 32 individuals.

John D. writes, “Because Monica Rambeau is the better version of Captain Marvel.”

Rob V. says, “Diversity should be real and not an agenda for an actress to preach.”

Frank P. adds, “CM should be Monica Rambeau whos hero was her father a New Orleans police officer..”

Michael K. writes, “If she cared about diversity why as a white woman did she take a role meant for a black woman.”

YouTube commentator Eric July described Marvel’s portrayal of Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel as racist.

July stated, ““When it comes to the relationship between Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers in this movie it embodies exactly how white leftists, social justice advocates see themselves.” He continues, “But the complete change of Monica highlights how they can step on black canon if it means they can grandstand or signal.”

He specifically notes why the portrayal of Rambeau in Captain Marvel was racist:

“Notice how Monica is a kid right now by the time Endgame drops she will have been an adult right? I’m calling it right now. She will emerge with powers and it will unfortunately be influenced by Carol Danvers as if she had something to do with why she became a hero. Though this is an offensive deviation from the original material that’s the typical elitist white leftist approach. As long as they remain on top, they will pretend they give a damn about their little stupid ass representation. It has to be on their terms. And they have to be the one’s ushering it in to feel good about themselves.”

He adds:

“Even though I can argue that what they did to Monica was an act of racism, if we really wanted to make this a battle of the buzz terms. They probably didn’t even realize what they did because it’s so second nature to these fools. You are down there, and they of course think of themselves up here. So, now they are laughing to the bank after they knocked Monica all the way down to this innocent child. An innocent child that looks up to this new hero and the strongest person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, white blonde woman by the name of Carol Danvers, who is the seventh damn version of Captain Marvel.”

While July stated Marvel’s portrayal of Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel is racist, Brie Larson talks about promoting diversity as much as she can in her press engagements.

Most recently she appeared on Variety and iHeart Radio’s new podcast,
“The Big Cast” where she noted that “we gotta move faster” when it comes to LGBTQ and diversity representation in superhero films.

In fact, it’s not just representation in the films that Larson has been advocating for. She has also made it a point to do press interviews with “diverse” people. Larson stated, “What I’m looking for is to bring more seats up to the table. No one is getting their chair taken away. There’s not less seats at the table, there’s just more seats at the table.”

What do you make of this petition? Do you think Brie Larson should step down as Captain Marvel? Will you be signing the petition?
