Jared Leto Reveals Whether or Not He Will Return as Joker in Birds of Prey

We know that a Joker cameo is filmed for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) based on photos leaked weeks ago. The only question remaining is Jared Leto’s involvement.

The actor, musician, and Joker actor from Suicide Squad talked with Variety about whether or not he will show up with his green hair and shiny grills again. When asked, he said, “I don’t think so. You’d have to ask them [the producers].”

Then in reference to Internet rumors over the photos making the rounds, he gave the interviewer a “Well, we’ll see.” Leto could be playing coy, but does not sound like he knows much about Birds of Prey which gives the feeling he won’t be in it. However, he is not closing the door on DC’s most popular villain at all, saying:

“I would definitely play the Joker again. It all depends on the script and the circumstances as it always does.”

That’s the usual response. I suppose the money needs to be right too (“as it always does”). If not, the script for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad must have been better than the final product.

And since Leto isn’t the only Oscar-caliber thespian portraying good old Mr. J these days, Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips’ unconnected, standalone origin story came up too. Leto was positive about the alternative take, though he hasn’t even seen the trailer, considering it something good for comic book movies overall.

The more comic-based adaptations, Leto says, the more people that are excited to go to the movies. And he thinks Avengers: Endgame is proof of that:

“I mean, five or 10 years ago, I don’t know if we thought that there would be people this excited about going to the movies this weekend.”

Leto is close to Marvel as well at the moment since he is filming the Sony Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius, based on the Spider-verse’s resident living vampire. Of the experience on set and flying back and forth between the States and locations in London, he called it “surprisingly” fun when, typically, these productions are so demanding.

How do you feel? Do you want Jared Leto to play The Joker again?
