Sonic the Hedgehog Director Jeff Fowler Confirms Design Changes Coming to Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler responded to overwhelming fan criticism regarding the design of Sonic in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film.

Fowler took to Twitter where he confirmed that that design changes are “going to happen.” He also indicated these changes are going to happen because of the feedback from the fans, “The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes.” He concluded, “Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast”

The trailer and more specifically the design for Sonic the Hedgehog was overwhelmingly criticized when the trailer for the film was released this week. Maybe the most popular criticism came in the form of a Godfather meme.

While Fowler doesn’t indicate when the new character design will be ready, one has to imagine it will take quite a bit of effort to create a new design. Not to mention they have a short window in order to get the new design out given the film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 8th. And while the film comes out on November 8th, there are usually test screenings beforehand so directors and producers can make tweaks to improve their product.

One has to assume, they won’t be releasing any new footage until the new character design is ready to go. The risk in completely redesigning the character is that the new design might even be worse than the old design. Fortunately, Sonic is no stranger to animation and they have some really solid groundwork laid out that they can use from the 1993 animated Sonic the Hedgehog series. Not to mention, numerous video games featuring Sonic. It’s also possible that they might look to the upcoming Pokemon Detective Pikachu film for inspiration when it comes to character design.

I mean the most recent Sonic the Hedgehog design from this year’s Sonic Team Racing looks pretty solid.
