Avengers: Endgame Directors Respond to Fan Theories Regarding Namor and Captain Britain

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently responded to fan theories regarding alleged easter eggs hinting at the presence of both Namor and Captain Britain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The directors appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, who asked them about the potential Namor and Captain Britain references.

Namor

The fan theory surrounding Namor stems from Okoye, who was leading Wakanda in the post-Snap world, reported she was detecting oceanic earthquakes off the coast of Africa. When questioned on whether or not that was a reference to Namor, Joe Russo smiled and said, “Maaaybe.” Anthony Russo would add, “Some people may interpret it that way.”

Joe Russo added, “It could just be an earthquake.”

Kevin Feige actually recently discussed Namor and his potential future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back in October, Feige indicated that Namor could make an appearance, but they were still deciding on if and when.

Recent rumors indicate Namor could show up in either Doctor Strange 2 or Black Panther 2. In fact, those rumors gained legitimacy when Doctor Strange 2 director Scott Derrickson tweeted out an image of Doctor Strange struggling to breath as Namor raced up behind him. The image was from the 2011 comic book series [easyazon_link identifier=”0785157964″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Fear Itself: The Deep[/easyazon_link] by Cullen Bunn and Lee Garbett. Derrickson caption the photo, “Are you Experienced?”

Captain Britain

The reference to Captain Britain came about when Captain America and Iron Man traveled back to the 1970s. While attempting to avoid detection in the highly secured compound, Captain America discovers Peggy Carter’s office and eavesdrops on a conversation she is having. During that conversation, Peggy Carter drops the name “Braddock” noting that an Agent Braddock hasn’t checked in. Many believe this is a reference to Captain Britain whose name is Brian Braddock. While, it could be a reference to Captain Britain. The famous British superhero also has a famous twin sister named Elizabeth Braddock. You might know her as Psylocke. They also have another brother named James Braddock Jr.

The Russo brothers once again sidestepped the question. Joe Russo responded, “I think we uh, maybe… or maybe it’s just a guy named Braddock [laughs].”

The idea that it is a Captain Britain reference more than likely comes from the fact that a report surfaced last September that Marvel was looking to introduce both Captain Britain and the Black Knight in a film directed by Guy Ritchie. That report indicated that Marvel Studios had booked space at Pinewood Studios for auditions for the film.

However, if the reference is to Psylocke, it’s quite possible we could be seeing the X-Men sooner rather than later.

It’s more than likely it could even be hinting at an Excalibur film. Marvel doesn’t seem to be shying away from team films. They are currently working on Eternals, which is expected to be a team film as well as James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

And after the recent embrace of a multiverse in the newest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, it’s quite possible Excalibur could be happening. In the comics, Captain Britain protects a lighthouse that is placed at the convergence of realities. The Excalibur team would actually hop through multiple dimensions and parallel worlds as they went on a number of adventures. The original Excalibur team created by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis included Captain Britain, Meggan, Nightcrawler, Phoenix, Shadowcat, and Lockheed. However, the team also included the Black Knight, Psylocke, Colossus, Kylun, Dazzler, Warlock, Cerise, and others.

What do you make of the Russo brothers response? Do you think Namor and Captain Britain could be in the future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
