Rumor: Venom to Face Off Against Spider-Man in Spider-Man 3

A new rumor suggests Venom will face off against Spider-Man in a future Spider-Man 3 film.

The rumor comes from Roger Wardell, who states, “There are no plans to add Deadpool in an MCU Spider-Man 3, but Sony desperately wants Tom Hardy’s Venom in this movie.”

Not only does Wardell refute the recent rumors that Marvel Studios might be looking to introduce Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their Spider-Man film, but he indicates Sony wants a showdown with Venom and Spider-Man.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise as Sony continues to develop their Spider-Man universe or Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. They are currently filming a live-action Morbius film with Jared Leto and Doctor Who alumni Matt Smith. Other films rumored to be in the works include Kraven the Hunter, Silk, and Jackpot. There were also reports that Black Cat and Silver Sable would get their own solo films after Sony scrapped the Silver & Black film featuring the two characters

Sony’s first solo foray into their own universe was a resounding financial success. Hardy’s Venom grossed $855 million at the global box office on just a $100 million production budget. While the film was critically panned, audiences overwhelming enjoyed the film. It received an 81% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

That success saw Variety report a sequel to Venom was in the works with writer Kelly Marcel, who worked on the first film. The film is expected to see Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson reprise their roles.

It’s most likely the Venom and Spider-Man crossover won’t happen until after the Venom sequel. It’s possible we could see Venom, Carnage, and Spider-Man all in the same movie. And I imagine they will be introduced to each other through the Marvel Multiverse, which looks to be explored in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home film.
