Batman Writer Tom King Hired to Write New Gods Screenplay with Director Ava DuVernay

Current Batman scribe Tom King has yet another new assignment. He has been hired to pen the script of Warner Bros.’ New Gods movie with Ava DuVernay.

TheWrap broke the news which was also backed up by DuVernay via Twitter. She posted a selfie with King and posed that timeworn question: “Are you ready?”

I think we’re all ready for this.

DC confirmed the news too, saying:

“Tom King will be co-writing the script to DuVernay’s New Gods movie, which is currently in development at Warner Bros.”

King won an Eisner Award for his work on Mister Miracle, who will most likely be the central focus of New Gods, so he is arguably the best man for the job.

His current gig, writing Batman, ends with issue #85. The rumor mill buzzed with speculation for months he was getting removed by DC Editorial. King actually was reassigned to Batman/Catwoman, a 12-issue series launching next January. It will reteam him with Clay Mann, his partner from his Heroes in Crisis days.

King’s transition makes sense when, during his tenure, Batman and Catwoman got engaged — formalizing their all-too complicated romance. However, they’ve failed to tie the knot.

Ava DuVernay took on directing, and co-writer, duties last year. Prior to joining up with Warner-DC, she had the chance to direct a comic-book movie, Black Panther, but passed. She ended up doing A Wrinkle in Time which flopped pretty hard and is considered one of the worst movies of 2018.

DuVernay is the third in a growing sorority of directors at WB that started with Patty Jenkins and also includes Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey). For good measure, you can say Margot Robbie — who functions as a producer and actress — and writer Christina Hodson are part of the group as well.

New Gods is in the development stage without a determined date for release. The plot reportedly involves Mister Miracle and Big Barda fighting Granny Goodness and The Female Furies.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Tom King can produce with New Gods?
