Rumor: Supergirl Feature Film Will Start Filming Early Next Year

Man of Steel 2 is getting nowhere in spite of a unique Superman pitch by Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar. However, the effort to bring Superman’s cousin Kara into the DC Extended Universe seems to be having better luck.

Forbes reports the Supergirl movie in the works may see a start to production as early as the first quarter of 2020 when The Batman begins filming. Aside from that, not much was mentioned except casting information might be doled out over the next few months, but it’s all tentative at this point.

What we know is Supergirl was announced late last summer as in development and is supposedly an origin story set in the 1970s, differentiating it from The CW show set in the present day.

We’ve been here before; Supergirl was made into a movie in the 80s, a notorious flop spinning off from the floundering Superman franchise starring Christopher Reeve. Lead actress Helen Slater made a name for herself and stayed on the comic-nerd radar for decades. She appeared in Batman: The Animated Series voicing Talia, Smallville as Kal-El’s mother Lara, and on The CW’s Supergirl series as Eliza Danvers.

Warner Bros. is developing or at least contemplating a fresh slate of DC films based on cult-favorite characters. Booster Gold and The CW’s Supergirl supporting character Martian Manhunter are among those who have features announced or rumored.

There is also a discernible shift in their focus toward projects surrounding female adventurers. Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey come out next year, Batgirl might swing into theaters soon, and The New Gods is being written by Tom King and Ava DuVernay. That last one reportedly will heavily involve Big Barda and The Female Furies.

In addition, WB’s push for woman directors is in full effect, DuVernay, Cathy Yan, and Patty Jenkins being in charge of the above productions. A rumor going around is Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) is who the studio wants to direct Supergirl. Though no director has been hired officially, don’t be surprised if a lady gets the job.
