A new report indicates Dynamite Entertainment, Christopher Priest, and Ergun Gunduz’s upcoming Vampirella series is already shattering sales record for the company and franchise.

PreviewsWorld reports that “current orders project a print run in excess of 60,000 right out of the gate!” They note this makes it “not only the most successful Vampirella comic of the modern era, but also one of the top books for July.” 60,000 print sales would put Vampirella in the top 15 comics for April.

Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci told them:

“July is a huge month for us this year and lays the foundation for a strong rest of the year and going into 2020. For the anniversary, we went all out with Vampirella offerings to spoil fans of the character both new and old. To have Christopher Priest helming the new ongoing series as the centerpiece is a dream come true. He’s more than welcome to stay on the title as long as he’d like.”

In fact, Dynamite announced that Priest will be on Vampirella for “a full year and counting.”

Priest commented:

“As cliched as it sounds, I really am thrilled and excited to be reunited with my old Ka-Zar editor, Matt Idelson, otherwise known as the Father of Everett K. Ross (Black Panther). Matt’s keen and often twisted sense of humor reassures me that he’ll understand mine as we take a respectful yet progressively unorthodox swing at a beloved and time-honored character. I’m hoping to bring the same sense of newness within the framework of legacy I brought to Panther, along with a similar introspection into modern culture and a dash of humor as Vampi takes a bite out of crime. Shake briskly and serve chilled.”

Priest’s Vampirella and his own person and beliefs already came under criticism from Newsarama’s Chris Arrant. However, Priest expertly rebuffed his criticism and gave him an education on free speech.

Dynamite Entertainment even faced criticism for their upcoming Vampirella book from DC Comics’ Batman Secret Files writer Cheryl Lyn Eaton, who claimed the company was “courting alt-right groups.

Eaton would not limit her attacks to Dynamite. She would also target Ethan Van Sciver who is selling retailer variant covers for Vampirella #1 featuring his Cyberfrog and Salamandroid characters. The variants have currently earned over $27,000 on IndieGoGo.

Eaton would be joined by Kwanza Osajyefo, Tim Doyle, and io9 Deputy Editor Jill Pantozzi. Pantozzi specifically targeted Dynamite for retweeting our article featuring Vampirella cosplayer Katy DeCobray.

Despite these attacks, it looks like Dynamite, Christopher Priest, and Ergun Gunduz have an instant hit on their hands.
