Marvel Studios Producer Victoria Alonso: “We Are Actively Working On Making Our Universe As Diverse and Inclusive As We Can”

Marvel Studios producer Victoria Alonso recently did an Ask Me Anything on the Marvel Studios subreddit where she indicated Marvel Studios is “actively working on making our universe as diverse and inclusive as we can.”

Alonso noted that she has been with Marvel Studios since late 2005 at the very beginning of Iron Man. She began as a co-producer on Iron Man and visual effects producer.

During the AMA she noted that her best part of working for Marvel Studios is “to be able to show new generations the characters that represent them in each and every way.” She would go on to note that she “would feel honored to have a member of the LGBTQ+ group represented in our films and I hope the future shows that.”

Alonso’s comments should not come as a surprise. She recently described the X-Men as “outdated” arguing there are a number of female characters in the team.

She also discussed how Marvel Studios is committed to diversity at the world premiere of Captain Marvel.

“Why wouldn’t we be? Why wouldn’t we be? I’m so passionate about this. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why wouldn’t we only want to be recognized by one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, it’s inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal and the diversity and inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.”

She would go on to state that the world is ready for an openly gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She stated, “The world is ready, the world is ready.”

Alonso’s comments echo what Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said in the past. Feige commented about incorporating LGBT heroes while talking with ET. He noted the idea was “percolating.” He previously spoke about introducing LGBTQ characters with The Playlist last June noting that there would be “both ones you’ve seen and you haven’t seen.”

Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo also told Variety that “the future of these movies will be an inclusive one.” He added, “Diversity, both in front of and behind the camera, will be its gold standard.”

As to what that diversity and inclusivity could look like Kevin Feige told Movies.com:

“We always look back to get those ideas … sometimes very specific storylines like “Civil War,” sometimes just nuggets or characters like “Planet Hulk,” So anything that’s happened in the comics, even a female Thor, become great potentials and the ideas from which future movies can be born.”

Marvel Studios is currently in production on the Black Widow solo film. They have also confirmed they are developing an Eternals film as well as a Shang-Chi movie. Other movies in development include Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Rumors indicate that they could also be developing a New Avengers movie as well as an Ant-Man 3 film.

Marvel Studios will also be bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the small screen on Disney+. They have announced a WandaVision, Loki, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as TV series. Rumors indicate there could be a She-Hulk, Hawkeye, and Lady Sif show down the road.

What do you make of Alonso’s statements? Are you excited about this direction for Marvel Studios? Or do you think the outlook doesn’t look good?
