Margot Robbie on Harley Quinn’s Birds of Prey Costumes: “Less Male Gaze-Y”

Margot Robbie recently discussed her upcoming Birds of Prey film where she reprises her role as Harley Quinn.

In the interview with Vogue, Robbie described that the new Harley Quinn costume. She stated, “Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze-y.”

Birds of Prey costume designer Erin Benach added, “That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer.”

It’s unclear what Robbie means by “less male gaze-y,” but the teaser trailer showed Robbie’s Quinn still revealing much of her midriff in multiple outfits. There has been no sign of Quinn’s original animated series costume.

Vogue’s Irina Aleksander described the wardrobe as “more Sporty Spice than male fantasy.”

Earlier in the interview, Robbie objected to being described as a “bombshell.” She stated:

“I hate that word. I hate it—so much. I feel like a brat saying that because thereare worse things, but I’m not a bombshell. I’m not someone who walks in a room and the record stops and people turn like, ‘Look at that woman.’ That doesn’t happen. People who know me, if they had to sum me up in one word I don’t know what that word would be, but I’m certain it would not be bombshell.”

While Robbie objected to being described as a bombshell, she wasn’t afraid to criticize other actors who might have some outrageous demands when they are on set.

“They must have massive insecurities they’re compensating for.”

Aleksander also revealed that the Birds of Prey budget is only $75 million. Robbie noted, “Well, we’re on schedule and on budget, which is a wonderful place to be.”

Birds of Prey is written by Christina Hodson. Cathy Yan is directing the film. The film is expected to see Harley Quinn team up with Renee Montoya, Black Canary, and Huntress to rescue young Cassandra Cain who has been kidnapped by McGregor’s Black Mask.

The film will reportedly not credit the original creator of Birds of Prey, Jordan Gorfinkel.

What do you make of Robbie’s comments? Are you looking forward to Birds of Prey?
