Rotten Tomatoes

The critic score on Rotten Tomatoes currently sits at 31% from 42 reviews.

Here’s what the critics are saying:

Mara Reinstein at US Weekly gives the film a rotten review. She writes, “The Men in Black agents zap, but they have no zip.”

William Bibbiani at TheWrap gives the film a positive review. He writes, “Gone is the social commentary, and in its place is globetrotting sci-fi super spy adventure, empty but entertaining, and carried almost exclusively on the multimillion-dollar charms of its stars.”

Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gives the film a 2.5/4. He writes, “Thompson does here what Tommy Lee Jones did so well in the first “Men in Black”… By not overtly giving a rip about the demands or dictates of the franchise machinery clanking all around her, she lightens the load and keeps everything moving efficiently.”

Eric Kohn at IndieWire gives the film a D+. He writes, “Of course, Thompson should star in as many big Hollywood movies as it takes to rejuvenate Hollywood’s star system and ensure more women anchor the biggest franchises in play, but “Men in Black” hasn’t been in play for years.”

Darren French at Entertainment Weekly gives the film a C-. He writes, “International is better than Men in Black II and worse than Men in Black III, and they’re all bad, so erase this sentence from your memory.”

Peter Bradshaw at the Guardian gives the film a 1/5. He writes, “It’s time to wave the neuralyzer in the face of every executive involved and murmur softly: forget about this franchise.”

Metacritic

The film fares a little better on Metacritic where it currently has a Metascore of 41 from 16 reviews. There are currently 3 positive, 8 mixed, and 5 negative.

Here’s what the critics are saying on Metacritic:

Dan Mecca at The Film Stage gives the film a 75. He writes, “This is breezy stuff, a welcome respite in the hot summer months.”

James Dyer at Empire gives the film a 60. He writes, “Unasked for, unnecessary but unexpectedly enjoyable.”

Peter Debruge at Variety gives the film a 60. He writes, “The connection between Tessa Thompson and Hemsworth is what saves the day, not anything their characters do onscreen.”

Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter gives the film a 60. He writes, “In and of itself, this revamp is mildly engaging but also feels like it’s expending a great deal of energy for quite modest entertainment returns.”

David Sim at The Atlantic gives the film a 30. He writes, “This sequel-slash-spinoff comes across as a lifeless piece of content, bearing a brand name and a glossy look but little else to remember it by.”

Tim Grierson at Screen International gives the film a 30. He writes, “Thompson brings her reliably spry comedic talents as a new recruit who discovers all the extra-terrestrials in our midst, but she’s easily overmatched by a witless script, laboured plot and, most depressingly, a badly misjudged performance from her usually-charming co-star.”

Roger Moore at Movie Nation gives the film a 38. He writes, “The aliens are far more lifelike than they ever were in the Will Smith/Tommie Lee Jones “MIB” movies, but the shiny ray guns are as generic as ever and the shootouts surprisingly dull, if expensive looking.”

Men in Black: International is in theaters on June 14, 2019.
