Brie Larson Praises Stunt Doubles at MTV Movie Awards After Claiming She Did Most of Her Own Stunts for Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson praised her stunt doubles at the MTV Movie Awards after previously claiming she did most of her own stunts for Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.

Larson and her stunt doubles Renae Moneymaker and Joanna Bennett took to the MTV Movie Awards stage after Larson won the award for Best Fight.

Larson stated, “This is so cool. First and foremost thank you MTV and thank you to the fans. Thank you so much for voting for this film we’re so proud of.”

Larson then praised her stunt doubles, “But I wanted to take this moment to really say thank you to the two women that are standing here beside me. These are the women who trained me and were also the stunt doubles for Captain Marvel.”

She added, “I could not have made this film without them. They are really the baseline for who she is. They are the living embodiment of Captain Marvel.”

Larson previously claimed she did most of her own stunts. In an interview with USA Today, Larson stated, “I just assumed everybody did their own stunts, but it turns out they don’t.” She added, “It was happy ignorance, I guess.”

In that same interview, producer Jonathan Schwartz attempted to add to the allure of Larson stating, “On any other Marvel movie, stunt doubles would be doing 99 percent of what she’s doing.” He continued, “We sort of had to say, ‘You need to get some rest. Stop pushing yourself so hard.’”

Schwartz then noted, “But when you see this movie, the amount of practical stunts that she’s doing by herself will boggle your mind, and make you say, ‘I can’t believe they let her do that.’”

Larson made similar comments in an interview with Entertainment Tonight alongside Chris Hemsworth and Don Cheadle. In fact, Larson got into a heated debate over doing her own stunts with Hemsworth.

Larson states, “See this is the thing. I did my stunts because I thought that’s what everyone did.”

Hemsworth then ribs her a little bit saying, “Kind of Tom Cruise over here.”

Larson didn’t take that too kindly. She responded, “No, I’ll be the first me, not the next Tom Cruise. Thank you very much.”

Interestingly enough, Joanna Bennett actually did an interview with Stylist where she described just what she did on Captain Marvel.

“On Captain Marvel we began rehearsing three months before production even started. Because the movie is extremely stunt heavy, I shared the part with another double, Renae Moneymaker. We went through the action scenes with Brie to work out what she could and couldn’t do.”

Larson is no stranger to backtracking her public statements. In the lead-up to Captain Marvel, Larson had to clarify her comments regarding reducing the amount of white men who would cover her on the press tour and review the film.

What do you make of Larson recognizing the stunt doubles at the MTV Movie Awards? Do you think she was being genuine? Or do you think she made the public display to backtrack on her previous comments about doing her own stunts?
