Mark Hamill, Aubrey Plaza, and Brian Tyree Henry Compare Chucky to Donald Trump in Child’s Play Reboot

The upcoming Child’s Play remake had its world premiere on Wednesday night and a number of the stars appeared on the red carpet to compare the redesigned Chucky doll to President Donald Trump.

Variety spoke with Aubrey Plaza, Mark Hamill, and Brian Tyree Henry about Chucky’s resemblance to Donald Trump.

Plaza told Variety, “Oh, you caught that?” She added, “I’m waiting for all of the think pieces to come out about this issue. I mean, what can I say? The thought crossed my mind a couple of times. Maybe I improvised some lines about it. Maybe they made it in the cut. Maybe they didn’t. We’ll see.”

Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill, who voices Chucky added his own thoughts and noted that the doll resembles Donald Trump, “That’s pretty accurate.” He added, “Now he’s even creepier than he was before.”

Brian Tyree Henry would also weigh in on the doll’s likeness to President Donald Trump, “[Chucky’s] incredibly creepy. And who’s creepier [than Trump]? You know what I’m saying?”

Tyree also noted that the film does not see the black character die first, “Know that I wouldn’t have taken it, if that were the case. [But] it is true: That is the trope, and that was the way horror movies were back then — they were commentaries on what we went through socially at the time.”

This rebooted Child’s Play features a new origin for Chucky. Hamill explains, “The fundamental difference is the origin of Chucky — he’s not a serial killer that transposes his soul into a doll, he’s artificial intelligence and someone maliciously takes off the safety restrictions in his operating system.” Hamill’s statement confirms a number of reports that Chucky’s origin would be radically changed.

The movie is not connected to the original creatives behind the first Child’s Play film. In fact, creator Don Mancini has been outspoken against the reboot of the film.

Child’s Play official hits theaters on June 21, 2019.

Do you plan on checking out Child’s Play? Are the comparisons between Chucky and Donald Trump a turn on or a turn off?
