Report: Production Begins on Leigh Whannel and Blumhouse’s Invisible Man

Production has officially begun on Blumhouse’s remake of The Invisible Man. Director Leigh Whannell (writer of Saw) announced it on Twitter. He shared a photo of a slate showing his name, the cinematographer Stefan Duscio, the scene and take they were on. There was also a detached car seat sitting in the background.
Whannell jokingly asked for recommendations on what to do in Sydney, Australia. Then, he segued into a declaration: “STARTING TODAY” (Monday) filming is underway in his native Outback. Check out the tweet below:

Based on a science-fiction novel by H.G. Wells, Whannell’s film is a modern retelling of the book and Universal Pictures’ Golden Age masterpiece. Authentically or not, it is billed as an entry in the company’s new Dark Universe.
An Invisible Man starring Johnny Depp was planned as part of the shared Dark Universe. Both were scrapped after the lukewarm performance and reception of 2017’s The Mummy with Tom Cruise. In an approach mirroring Warner Bros.’ new model with DC, Universal announced this year they were focusing on individual character-driven movies guided by their director.
A staple of late-night classic horror movie programs, The Invisible Man came out in 1933. It starred Claude Rains in the title role and was directed by Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein helmer James Whale.
Several sequels followed, including The Invisible Man Returns with Vincent Price, The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent, The Invisible Man’s Revenge, and Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man in 1951.
The Many “Faces” of The Invisible Man
The concept has been revisited and loosely adapted over the years in films such as The Amazing Transparent Man and Hollow Man. On TV, he appeared noteworthily in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series (“See No Evil”) and a Syfy TV series from the early 2000s.
A version of the character was also a member of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which got adapted into a movie in 2003. Tony Curran played the part of Rodney Skinner.
Leigh Whannell’s Invisible Man stars Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Haunting of Hill House) in the main role. Whether you see him or not, the movie is aiming for a March 2020 release.
Here is a synopsis:
“After her abusive ex-boyfriend (Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide, naive widow Cecilia (Moss) begins to rebuild her life for the better. However, her sense of reality is put into question when she begins to suspect her former boyfriend is not actually dead as she had thought.”
