Natalie Portman To Reprise Her Role as Jane Foster/Thor—Goddess of Thunder!?!

There’s a new female Thor.
Her name is Jane Foster.
Kevin Feige on Saturday during Marvel’s San Diego Comic Con panel in Hall H partly made the announcement. The Thor series will have an upcoming fourth film titled Thor: Love and Thunder. This was the title that Taika Waititi was announced to have taken up while putting the live action Akira film on the back burner.
Bringing Natalie Portman on stage during the announcement, she picked up Thor’s hammer, saying,
“I’ve always had a little hammer envy.”
This film will take from Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic series, which depicts the female Thor/Jane Foster. Director Taika Waititi was also in the Hall H presentation, stating that the fourth film of the Thor franchise is inspired by this take.
We figured that there would be a fourth film given the success of Thor: Ragnarok. Notably, a film Portman was not present for (she was briefly mentioned during a comedic scene in the film). However, we didn’t expect they would adapt this comic book story line in the films and get Portman back to reprise the role.

Portman has played Jane Foster for two of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the solo Thor film and the sequel, Thor: The Dark World. Footage from that sequel is used in Avengers: Endgame, with Rocket Raccoon digitally inserted to extract the Reality Stone from her.
However, her role was mostly as a co-star to Chris Hemsworth, acting as a love interest and damsel in distress for the first and second films respectively. There was a rumor that she left the MCU films because of what happened to film director Patty Jenkins for the Thor sequel.
In a 2016 interview with the Wall Street Journal, Portman stated that she was “done,”
“As far as I know, I’m done. I mean, I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7, or whatever.”

But she graced the red carpet premiere of Avengers: Endgame recently. And now with her appearance in Hall H and picking up the title of Thor for an upcoming film, it’s pretty much a done deal that she will reprise the Jane Foster role long before Avengers 7. But she might be up for that 7th Avengers film.

Taika Waititi will be adapting some of the material from Unworthy Thor and the Jason Aaron Thor series. In this comic, Jane Foster contracts breast cancer and has to defend Earth against a horde of Frost Giants. Thor is no longer worthy of wielding Mjolnir. So Foster has to pick up the hammer and becomes the worthy Thor. But in doing so, it kills any progress the chemotherapy had on her system, and ultimately kills her.
How the films will depict this is a bit of a mystery. The timeline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently has Mjolnir shattered to pieces. This means the hammer will have to be reforged. Or some other means will be used to put the pieces back together. It has to happen if Portman’s character will use it.
We haven’t seen Portman in any big action sequences since Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. It’ll be interesting to see her progress to get into fighting shape to take on the title of Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, slated for November 5, 2021.
