Petition Launched to Save Netflix’s The OA

Fans have launched a petition to save Netflix’s The OA after the show was cancelled after only two seasons.

Netflix’s head of original content Cindy Holland issued a statement announcing the show’s cancellation on Monday writing, “We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of The OA, and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry.” Holland added, “We look forward to working with them again in the future, in this and perhaps many other dimensions.”

The OA’s co-creator and star Brit Marling took to Instagram to respond to the show’s cancellation. She wrote, “Zal and I are deeply sad not to finish this story. The first time I heard the news I had a good cry. So did one of our executives at Netflix who has been with us since the early days when we were sketching out Hap’s basement on the floor of our production office in Queens. It’s been an intense journey for everyone who worked on and cared about this story.”

She would add, “While we cannot finish this story, I can promise you we will tell others. I haven’t figured out any other effective coping mechanism for being alive in the anthropocene. And maybe, in some way, it’s okay not to conclude these characters. Steve Winchell will be suspended in time in our imaginations, infinitely evolving, forever running after and finally reaching the ambulance and OA.”

Marling’s co-creator Zal Batmanglij simply shared a photo of Steve Winchell chasing the ambulance.

The OA Petition

The petition was launched by Maureen Boyd on Change.org. She described the purpose of the petition:

“The OA is a ground breaking television series, presenting an original perspective on science, spirituality, and philosophy. It executes risky material exceptionally well, and breaks narrative boundaries. Netflix needs to include this show in its programming for those of us who want substantial, provoking, entertaining, and beautiful narrative. Please renew the OA.”

It has currently been signed by over 1,000 people already.

Netflix Previously Praised The OA

Netflix’s Cindy Holland had previously raved about Season 2 of The OA in 2018. She stated, “The OA is fantastic. I think from the very beginning, when Brit [Marling] and Zal [Batmanglij] pitched us a five-season arc, we were really excited and sat at the edge of our seats when they started talking about Season 2. I’ve seen some early cuts and the fans will be very happy.”

The show currently has an 83% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 84% Critics Score. The first season had a 76% Audience Score and a 77% Critics Score. The show would receive a 92% Critics Score and an 89% Audience Score.

Do you plan on signing the petition? Do you think Netflix should have renewed The OA?
