James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Might Get Goofy with the Aid of Bat-Mite

James Gunn’s films are known for his brand of humor and he could very well up the goof factor in The Suicide Squad. Also known for his tendency to utilize obscure and offbeat characters, Gunn might accomplish lightening the tone with the last DC oddity you might expect.
In an Instagram post promoting his superpowered slasher film Brightburn, Gunn responded to a fan excitedly mentioning the interdimensional imp Bat-Mite. “I love Bat-Mite,” the director wrote. (Related: John Cena Hints He Will Be in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad)

A Boy in an Ill-Fitting Suit
Introduced in May 1959, Bat-Mite hails from the Mite Dimension. Like Mr. Mxyzptlk, he is an imp except not malevolent by nature. Instead, he and his people idolize and imitate DC heroes. His idol, of course, is Batman and when Bat-Mite visits Earth he only wants to help the Caped Crusader on his escapades. That said, he is more nuisance than a sidekick and pestered the Dark Knight on occasion.
His powers are similar to Mxyzptlk’s in that he can warp reality and use magic which is closer to that of Thor. On Mite World, as on Asgard, magic and advanced technologies are one and the same. In the past, his powers became a source of trouble when they were lost to the Joker.
Bat-Mite made routine appearances in a myriad of Bat titles over the years. He disappeared for a while after 1964 but has been reincorporated into continuity. In other media, he turned up in Batman: the Brave and the Bold and an episode of Batman: The Animated Series as a toy robot created by Karl Rossum.
Gunn hasn’t disclosed the full roster for his Suicide Squad yet, but given that he inserted slapstick character Howard the Duck into Guardians of the Galaxy, a cameo at the least by Bat-Mite is entirely possible. He certainly wouldn’t be the most unorthodox addition to the team.
We know Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney will be returning to the line-up, as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, respectively. Viola Davis (as Amanda Waller) and Joel Kinnaman (as Rick Flag) are also coming back. Joining them are newcomers David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior playing a revamped Ratcatcher, and Idris Elba and John Cena in unverified roles (possibly Peacemaker and Bronze Tiger). The Suicide Squad enters production soon at Pinewood Studios in Georgia. Brightburn, meanwhile, is out on digital.
