Ezra Miller ‘Absolutely’ Confirms His Flash Movie is Happening

The Flash is one DC Extended Universe movie that’s been in the works for quite a while. Through all its ups and downs this past year, it seemed natural to think it would get canceled. After all, its spot on the slate was never secure.

That was until this week. Star Ezra Miller declared the film is happening. In a video-essay interview with W Korea, the actor talked about his life, society, music, and upcoming projects.

The Flash is one he said is “absolutely confirmed,” adding the following:

“[They] are Fantastic Beasts 3… The Flash movie…I’m making more music with Sons of an Illustrious Father, the band I’m in. And I’m also making some music on my own.”

He did not comment on the writer, director, tone, or possible start date which is reportedly slated for January 2020 — the culmination of a long wait. Miller first suited up as the Scarlet Speedster in 2016 for cameos in Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad. His full spin on the character was realized in Justice League.

A Speedster’s Struggles

A solo movie was announced during that time. Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter) wrote the first draft of a potential script but left due to creative differences with Warner Bros. Then the picture lost its director, Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), in 2016.

Writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Game Night, Spider-Man: Homecoming) took over but Miller didn’t share their vision of a light, fun movie more akin to Aquaman.

In response, he wrote his own script with Grant Morrison that would have a darker tone. Some reports claim that was a last-ditch effort to stay attached while the clock was running down on his contract, supposedly up in May. That script won’t be used and IT/IT: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti is now tapped. Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Bumblebee), who was rumored for a Batgirl movie, will now pen the screenplay. (Related: Report: Andy Muschietti To Direct Flash Movie with Ezra Miller)

The Flash was meant for a 2020 release at first. Production had been reported as starting as early as last February and later this November when Daley and Goldstein were attached. (Related: Report: The Flash Movie Starring Ezra Miller to Begin Filming in November)

Offering an explanation in March for all the delays, Miller stated:

“The reason we are late, is because we are all, and I include myself in this, we are meticulously focused on making a movie that is not just one of the greatest superhero movies that we can possibly make. This movie is also going to be a gift to the fans.”

He added the script needed perfecting.
