Mystic River Actor Sean Penn: “Leading Up to the Election of 2016, I Was Going to F****** Kill Myself…”

Mystic River actor Sean Penn appeared alongside Nick Offerman at the Los Angeles club Largo at the Coronet to promote his new book Bob Honey Sings Jimmy Crack Corn.

However, the conversation quickly became political as Penn detailed that the book was inspired by President Donald Trump’s election.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Penn told Offerman, “As it turns out, leading up to the election of 2016, I was going to fucking kill myself if I didn’t find a way out of just focusing on what the hell was happening.”
He added, “So I decided to take everything I thought and felt and exaggerated it and exaggerated the language in ways that would keep me giggling through one of the ugliest periods of conscious participation the country has ever had.”

Penn then detailed that he received further inspiration from his den which “has a fireplace in it, and might or might not have a model representing our current president hanging from a noose. And it may or may not have a button on that model where can you press it and hear quotations in his voice. And that’s where I write.”
Penn notes that criticism of his first Bob Honey book also fueled him, “Yes, my first favorite food would’ve been the Pulitzer Prize. My second favorite is what I got, which is all of these pig-shit, asshole, envious [critics] who wrote their own autobiography in the criticism of what I did, and reading between the lines, it was the greatest affirmation of anything I’ve ever done.”
He added, “They definitely, for a large degree, are responsible for me not continuing the laziness from the first book for so long, and definitely, definitely once I read those things I said, ‘I’m writing another one.”

The top review on Amazon for the first book reads, “Sweet Jesus, this book is absolutely terrible. It’s not a bad idea, but the execution – specifically the actual, line-by-line writing – is godawful.” They add, “I made it to page 22. It’s a waste of 11.99. It’s the first book I’ve read where I actually, no kidding, want my money back – and then a little extra for pain and suffering.”

The new book calls calls out Laura Ingraham and references a number of other real-life figures.
Penn explained, “You can be doing a fictional mob thing, and through the image of the mob there are some men. And then there’s the devil, so the devil is the devil.”

Penn would also comment on the 2020 election, “I don’t think there’s a chance in hell that Donald Trump is going to win the presidency next time and that’s because I’m getting a sense that it’s going be an exponential jump in young people who are going to say, ‘No thanks.'”
This isn’t the first time that the actor has taken a swipe at the President. In 2018, he wrote an op-ed in Time Magazine describing President Donald Trump as “an enemy of compassion.” He added, “President Donald Trump is an enemy of Americans, Republicans, Democrats, Independents and every new child born. An enemy of mankind. He is indeed an enemy of the state.”
His latest book, Bob Honey Sings Jimmy Crack Corn will be released September 10th, 2019.
