Piers Morgan Responds to “Feminist-By-Proxy” Pierce Brosnan’s Call for a Female James Bond

British news personality Piers Morgan responded to Pierce Brosnan’s call for a female James Bond by describing the actor as “feminist by proxy.”

Pierce Brosnan, who previously played James Bond, recently describing his excitement about the prospect of a female James Bond. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years, get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.”

Not only did he express excitement for a female James Bond, but he noted that Bond has to change in the #MeToo era of Hollywood, “Without question, yes… The #MeToo movement has been relevant and significant and well needed in our society, so they’ll have to address that.”

Brosnan did note that he doesn’t think it will happen under the current producers, “I don’t think that’s going to happen with the Broccolis. I don’t think that is going to happen under their watch.” (Related: James Bond Producer Barbara Broccoli Makes Declarative Statement on a Female 007)

Morgan savaged Brosnan, Daniel Craig, and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, who have all advocated for a female James Bond in an op-ed for the Daily Mail. Morgan writes, “it’s a virtue-signalling bandwagon that must be stopped dead in its tracks, like a Bond villain in the final ten minutes of each movie.” (Related: Daniel Craig on the Next James Bond: “Everybody Should be Considered”)

Morgan would then make an impassioned defense of James Bond as a man:

“No, I object to it because James Bond is a man, was always intended to be a man, and should remain a man.

You can make Bond a black man – I’d love to see Idris Elba take over from Craig – or any other ethnic persuasion man for that matter, but you can’t make him a woman.

Nor can you suddenly make him all ‘woke’ because that’s not what he ever was in any of Fleming’s novels.

Bond, like him or loathe him, is a male, straight, misogynist loner who prefers tuxedos to dresses.

That’s just who he is. Period.”

Morgan also threatened to launch revenge campaigns if James Bond is turned into a woman.

“But if the feminists do get their way, then let me put everyone on notice: I will launch revenge campaigns to have Bridget Jones turned into Brian Jones, Wonder Woman into Wonder Man, and Sleeping Beauty into a bearded bloke.”

While it’s unlikely that James Bond will be turned into a female under Barbara Broccoli, the current James Bond producer, leaks from the upcoming Bond film titled No Time to Die indicate that Captain Marvel actress Lashana Lynch will be called 007 in the film. The movie will also more than likely feature writing in vogue with Hollywood’s new #MeToo era. Solo: A Star Wars actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge was tapped to provide rewrites for No Time to Die. She spoke to Deadline to detail her vision for the Bond franchise. (Related: James Bond Scriptwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge: Bond 25 Film Must “Treat Women Properly” Even if Bond Doesn’t)

“There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not [the Bond franchise] is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women. I think that’s bollocks. I think he’s absolutely relevant now. It has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to this character.”

Piers Morgan is not alone in his belief that James Bond should remain a man. Eva Green, who played Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, stated:

“I’m for women, but I really think James Bond should remain a man. It doesn’t make sense for him to be a woman.”

Green added:

“Women can play different types of characters, be in action movies and be superheroes, but James Bond should always be a man and not be Jane Bond. There is history with the character that should continue. He should be played by a man.”

Rachel Weisz, who is Daniel Craig’s wife, also stated:

“Fleming] devoted an awful lot of time to writing this particular character, who is particularly male and relates in a particular way to women. Why not create your own story rather than jumping on to the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors? Women are really fascinating and interesting and should get their own stories.”

Bond girl Trina Parks also stated, “Lashana is a great actress, but I don’t really agree with her becoming 007. It’s not about her colour – a black James Bond, sure. But as a man.” She added, “It’s just because Bond, the spy code named 007, was written by Ian Fleming as a man. Miss Bond doesn’t have the same ring to it.” (Related: James Bond Girl Trina Parks on Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch Being 007: “I Don’t Really Agree With Her Becoming 007”)

And as Morgan points out another former Bond girl in actress Rosamund Pike also believes Bond should remain a man.

“James Bond is a character that Ian Fleming created,’ she said, ‘and the character is a man. It’s a very masculine creation. Why should a woman get sort of sloppy seconds? Why should she have been a man and now it has to be played by a woman? Why not be a kick-ass female agent in her own right?”

What do you make of Piers Morgan’s response to Pierce Brosnan and the seemingly increasing calls by male actors to have a female James Bond? Do you think James Bond should remain male?
