Knives Out Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes currently has the film at 100% from 26 reviewers. However, the actual score is 8.73/10.

Here’s what the reviewers are saying:

Justin Chang at the Los Angeles Times gives the film a fresh rating. He writes, “Johnson hasn’t just churned out a wink-wink spoof of the classical drawing-room mystery… with its ingenious twists and turns, he has crafted an intricate puzzle-box narrative worthy of the genre’s brainiest practitioners.”

Barry Hertz at Globe and Mail gives the film a 3.5/4. He writes, “[A] dizzy, politically astute murder-mystery comedy that, while not reinventing the genre, certainly hits all the expected beats with flair.”

David Ehrlich at IndieWire gives the film an A-. He writes, “A crackling, devious, and hugely satisfying old-school whodunnit with a modern twist…”

Joshua Rothkopf at Time Out gives the film a 3/5. He writes, “Do not expect subtlety; it’s the kind of movie that tells you the “game’s afoot” twice.”

Rendy Jones at Rendy Reviews gives the film a 4.5/5. He writes, “Undoubtedly, one of the year’s best original films, if not one of the best studio movies of the year. I haven’t had this much fun watching a movie in such a loooooong time.”

Angie Han at Mashable gives the film a fresh rating. She writes, “Knives Out is a classic whodunit, and doesn’t mind who knows it.”

Metacritic

Knives Out Metacritic

The Metacritic score is similar to the actual Rotten Tomatoes review score. It currently sits at 83 with 10 positive reviews and 1 mixed reviews.

Charles Bramesco at The Playlist gives the film a 100. He writes, “The genre maestro has his audience in good hands, “good” in this instance meaning both “skilled, capable, expert” and “decent, ethically sound.” He’s assembled a dazzling contraption that, if twisted in just the right way, pops open to reveal a nugget of wisdom crystallized by the cathartic final shot: we only really own what we earn.”

A.A. Down at AV Club gives the film a 91. They write, “Knives Out isn’t just deviously intelligent but also consistently gut-busting, and an impeccably crafted blast of Hollywood entertainment, built around several exceptional (and juicily venomous) performances.”

David Rooney at The Hollywood Reporter gives the film a 90. He writes, “A delicious throwback to the all-star whodunit, this juicy comedy thriller is a treat from start to finish.”

Richard Lawson at Vanity Fair gives the film an 88. He writes, “There is something undeniably exciting about seeing a polished piece of studio-ish entertainment like this be cognizant of the world it exists in.”

Peter Debruge at Variety gives the film an 80. He writes, “Knives Out recalls a time when audiences could still be surprised by such mysteries, before the genre devolved into a corny parody of itself. Johnson keeps us guessing, which is good, but the thing that makes this a better mousetrap than most isn’t the complexity, but the fact he’s managed to rig it without the usual cheese.”

Jack Cole at Slant gives the film a 75. He writes, “The actors’ hammy performances only compound the amusement of watching a dynasty propped up by largesse fall to pieces at the very thought of actually having to earn their way in life.”

Tim Grierson at Screen Daily gives the film a 70. He writes, “This thriller can sometimes be too mechanical — a breezy exercise if not always an emotionally satisfying one — and yet the large cast’s willingness to get on Johnson’s brainy, sprightly wavelength makes this an enjoyable romp.”

Knives Out Political Agenda

While the film appears to be receiving quite a bit of praise from a number of critics, there might be a reason why. Society Reviews notes a number of critics took to Twitter to celebrate the film for being a “f*** you to rich white Trump voters,” “a total take down of privilege and gringos,” and “a satire of Trump’s America” among others.

What do you make of these critic scores? Do you think the Audience Score will align with the critics on this one?
